Comments about Monroe Gas-Matic Passenger Car Shock Absorber:

Both the website and the cashier at the store stated that this particular shock, the Monroe Gas-Matic 55801, was a direct match and completely compatible with a 79 Pontiac Firebird. My car has zero suspension modifications and this shock is not even close to being the right size. At full extension, the shock measures 14.350". A stock height shock for this car needs to sit at 20" minimum full extension. AAP needs to inform their staff, and change their website so that they don't sell their customers parts that will not work.

Monroe makes a great shock, no doubt about it. But this is not the right part for a '70-'81 Caamaro or Firebird.

Comments about Monroe Gas-Matic Passenger Car Shock Absorber:

I purchased this pair of front shocks for a frame off restoration 2 yrs ago. I recently got to the point of driving the vehicle and had a very bad wheel hop on the left front wheel. Upon further inspection I discovered both shocks were completely useless. Compress them and they didn't come back out. Total of 70 miles on the shocks. I returned them and purchased a set of QA1 coil overs.,I will never purchase Monroe shocks again!

Comments about Monroe Gas-Matic Passenger Car Shock Absorber:

These shocks went on nicely, no problems with installation. About 10 minutes time for each shock. All you need is a 9/16" box wrench and a 9/16" deepwell socket and a 3/8" rachet. I didn't know if they would improve the ride and handling for the price I paid for them but WOW, What a Difference. I couldn't believe the ride quality that these shocks made. Cornering improved too with less lean in the curves . Crossing over railroad tracks are now effortless and you barely notice you're going over them. I purposely drove down a bumpy road just to see how well they worked and the ride is excellent and now like floating on air. These are excellent gas shocks for the money spent. A very affordable name-brand upgrade to any vehicle. With these shocks, you can't go wrong.
