Mobil1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS 75W-90 (1 qt.)

Part No. 104361/98W573 Warranty Details
Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS is a supreme-performance, synthetic, multipurpose SAE 75W-90 automotive gear lubricant that's designed to meet the performance requirements of modern passenger vehicles in a wide range of operating conditions, including limited-slip applications as well as deliver outstanding power transfer performance. Compared to conventional hypoid gear lubricants, Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricants LS 75W-90 performs exceptionally over a wide range of temperatures. Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS 75W-90 achieves this through a proprietary formulation that delivers optimized viscosity-temperature properties and a high level of inherent formulation stability to protect against thermal and oxidative degradation, wear, corrosion and viscosity loss associated with premature shearing. It also can be used in extended service and for aiding in fuel economy.

Product Features:
  • Meets the most severe API Service MT-1 and GL-5 EP gear oil service classification
  • Greater film strength at higher operating temperatures, reduced fluid friction and low-temperature application down to -50°C
  • Outstanding protection against low-speed/high-torque wear and high-speed scoring
  • Compatible with typical automotive seals and gaskets
  • Not recommended for automatic, manual or semiautomatic transmissions for which engine oil or automatic transmission fluids are recommended
  • Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS 75W-90 is recommended for use in modern high-performance automobiles like SUVs, Vans and light-duty trucks that require API GL-5 and MT-1 level performance

Changed to Mobil LS1 in my 2006 Tundra 4WD Limited slip (LS) about 8 months ago. After about 3-5k miles I started getting a chattering noise when turning sharp. Thought it was the front end, could not find anything wrong. Transmission maybe??? So I had the trans flushed at the Toyo dealer.(120k miles on truck). Could not be my rearend...I have Mobil 1. Changed over to Lucus 80W-90 standard gear oil with 1/3 of a bottle of the KW LS additive. My truck drives perfect again and turns are very smooth. Can't believe it took me 20k miles to figure out this product is all hype. The oil was still very clear though when I drained it. Only positive thing I can think of?

Synthetics are always the best lubricant. Shear strength, viscosity consistency and ease of use in any climate are always benefits of synthetics over conventional petroleum products. I use Mobil 1 products in my GT, my H-D, the wife's Lexus and my 17 year old 4Runner. Good stuff.

Comments about Mobil1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS 75W-90 (1 qt.):

I've used Mobil1 gear oil for more than ten years in nearly everything. I've used it in more than a few limited-slip differentials with no chattering or other nonsense. But they were all Fords. Based on other reviews, some other manufacturer's limited-slip differentials may need limited-slip additive to be added. Though I would try it without before doing this. If you do experience chattering, you can extract a few ounces and replace it with the additive. Some issues may be attributed to using the incorrect weight. Always use what the manufacturer recommends. If it requires 75w-140, do not try to save a few bucks with 75w-90. If it requires 75w-90, do not think that the thicker oil is good for your application. It will decrease your efficiency and prematurely wear your components.

Part of my regular maintenance gear oil change. Just hit 215,000 miles in my '98 Tacoma 3.4L MT 4x4. No issues and everthing runs like a champ. Might not be a redline product, but for the price it has always worked well for me (esp with a 30% off coupon!).

Very happy with this gear oil. Gear shifting is a lot smoother now, and it doesn't smell as bad as traditional gear oil. Only 4 stars because I still had to add a friction modifier even though the product says it's for limited slip.

                      A:

Hi Strahil, I'm glad to assist you! Unless the transmission specifically recommends an API GL-5 fluid for your transmission, it should not be used. GL-5 gear oils are designed for gears that require a high level of EP (Extreme Pressure) additives to protect gear teeth under extreme stress. Regrettably, these same additives can be very aggressive toward "yellow metals "and are generally not recommended where copper, brass and bronze components are used.

                      A:

Yes, Rod. You can use 75W-90 gear oil instead of 80W-90, unless your truck specifically says not to run 75w-90 lube. If you have a limited slip differential, you also need to add some LS fluid. However, we do offer the Valvoline High-Performance 80W-90 Gear Oil (Part No. VV831) which has the API Grade Rating: GL5 or MT-1.

Hi Joshua, I'm glad to help you! The LS 75-90 and 140 is GL-5 rated. As long as your differential in your owners manual and says you can use GL-5 you are okay. If you need a GL-4 the GL-5 will not work and is not back words compatible, it has yellow metals and will not work in that application.
