These days, the DIY or do-it-yourself crowd is all about creating custom work and one-off exhausts are no exception. Comments about MagnaFlow Universal Catalytic Converter:

Feel I got lucky. There were no dimensions to go by so I waited until I wouldn't need the car for a day or so; expecting to have to get adapter pipes for fit up.

Put the car on ramps and slid under on cardboard with my abrasive saw. Dropped the exhaust off the rubber donuts and cut off the old converter as close to its welds as possible. The replacement was just long enough to slip over the existing pipes and the right diameter to clamp right up (2-1/2"). Perfect fit for Buick Century.

Completed the job in one afternoon and saved plenty by doing it myself. Don't forget to recycle the old converter, you can recoup about half the purchase price for scrap metals.

BTW I'm 63 so don't think you can't do this also.

This product was the correct match for my car. The only issues with installation was the need for a welder to attach it back in the exhaust system.

Comments about MagnaFlow Universal Catalytic Converter:

Worked perfect for the car, enough back pressure the "check engine" light doesn't come on. It is a little louder than stock converter, but definitely tolerable, in fact adds a nicer tone. Installed by cutting out old and welding in new, was done in 45 minutes.

          • CUSTOMER CARE

            A:

I'm happy to help, Joe! This catalytic converter is considered universal. As such it fits more than your 2001 Pontiac Firebird 3.8L V6. It's difficult to know without speaking to that customer what difficulties they may have had with the installation. With a universal catalytic converter you will see the Exact Fit indication because it will reduce the emissions to the original equipment level and is able to fit under your vehicle. A direct fit converter will not require any cutting, welding or modification. It does cost more than the universal and the universal will require more work to install.
