It's made out of "low quality" stainless steel. The test was to see if a magnet would stick. It did.

Comments about MagnaFlow Direct Fit Catalytic Converter, Stainless Steel:

I ordered this unit for my 1991 Geo Metro Convertible that failed emissions tests. After installing the CAT, it passed with flying colors! However, the installation was not as simple as the description indicated. The manifold flange was welded too low on the pipe leaving the tube sticking up into the cup - I had to grind that off for the gasket to fit flush. [...] The aft flange is a generic, thick flange - it is too thick to use with the original muffler flange studs, the nuts only get half bite. It is also NOT setup to use the standard O-ring style gasket that the mating flange uses. Took me 3-days of running around getting parts and fixing problems with the unit to get it to fit. I STILL will need to have the stock muffler flange cut off and a generic flange welded on to use longer bolts and a flat exhaust gasket. Grrrr!
