I tried using this set to remove a worn oil pan drain plug. The plug wasn't rounded, and still had some ridges. I put the proper size onto the plug and started to try to extract it. Instead of removing the bolt, the Irwin Bolt Out Tool just shredded what was reaming of the bolt ridges. I ended up using a chisel and a hammer to spin the oil pan drain plug out. I have since then returned the Irwin Bolt Out kit. In future cases of this same problem, I will again just use a chisel and hammer to remove the worn bolt.

      outstanding tool

Comments about Irwin Bolt Out with Case:

I bought a set of these on 6 Aug 16 to remove an M12 bolt that had rounded off in the hub of my Jeep. Using an ordinary ratchet, it worked perfectly that day. There was another M12 bolt it wouldn't remove, but I think it might have worked if I had used an impact wrench or if I had been able to seat the socket firmly on the bolt. When an M12 bolt snapped off inside the hub the next week, I used the bolt grip socket on the bare threads of the broken bolt. It worked flawlessly even though some of the threads inside the hub were damaged. The bolt grip isn't perfect, but it's awfully close. I've used easyouts before, and besides the difficulty of drilling holes in damaged bolts, you run a significant risk of breaking an easyout inside a bolt. Good luck removing that. Moreover, an easyout won't help you with a nut that is rounded off. Before making your life a lot harder, why not give the Irwin bolt grip a try?

Comments about Irwin Bolt Out with Case:

Had a oem suspension bolt that was completely rounded off. the bolt out removed it on the first try and didn't slip at all.
The kit with the case was the same price as without so its worth it to have but the case is poorly designed and doesn't keep the bolt outs in order if you bump it around, still nice to have so you know where they're at.

      Just Tried!

      By

Comments about Irwin Bolt Out with Case:

Just received set, I'm trying to remove alternator bolt off a 2000 GMC Safari. All it wants to do slips off. I don't know it the angle of the bolt or what. I tried to hammer it on and it just slips off. I wish it was 1/2" drive instead of 3/8" drive, probably have more leverage. Otherwise its quality of set is great. I tried it on another project of mine it does work great, so I'll give it four stars. Just wish I could get the alternator bolt. I greatly appreciate if Irwin could give me ideas! somes

Comments about Irwin Bolt Out with Case:

I bought this today to get a bolt that was a little rounded. Used this tool and now the bolt is completely rounded and this junk set is at fault. The socket did not hold up and is now stripped also. Wish I could give a lower rating then 1 star. DO NOT BUY!

The bolt extractors do exactly what they are suppose to. I had a perfectly round oil drain plug and was still able to get it off with the extractor. You may have to force the extractor on the bolt a bit, but once it is properly placed on the bolt it will come out in no time! I will most likely buy the expansion set in order to have all sizes.

Absolutely a great product. Should call these Lifesavers if the name wasn't already taken. Took a rounded bolt off a crankshaft pulley on the first try. Going to go get the expansion set just in case I ever need it. No more busted knuckles. Thanks Irwin

Had a rounded drain plug. Tried many different tools, nothing else worked. Used boltgrip and it took longer to lift the car and get under it, than it was to remove the rounded bolt.

Yes, but you need to use a smaller size. I have seen them made for 1/4" and 3/16", but not in the packaged sets from Advanced or other sources easy to find.
