Comments about Imperial Fan Clutch - 7" Thermal Heavy Duty:

OKAY, so dont bother renting the tool they offer for this change of parts. NO USE ,... what you need is a pipewrench and a wire hanger. tie the wire hanger thru the hole on the pulley and tie it off on the top of the motor to keep it from turning.. another form of a tough strong wire would work too. use the pipewrench to turn or hit it with a hammer, or use a cheater pipe. This makes it an easy fix, anyone can do. No need to pay a mechanic to do this. once i had the right tools it took maybe 20 minutes to change this out!

HINT, HINT, to remove old clutch, take flat bar from woodworking tools, place behind waterpump pully against timing cover, turn nut counter clockwise with cressent wrench. If nut will not move, hold pulley with flatbar, and give quick blow with hammer to cressent wrench counter clockwise. keep giving quick blow until starts spinning. Yes it does come off, no don't buy special tools, just a cresent wrench, flat bar, and hammer. do not take engine fron apart, it will slide our, 4 bolts on fan and slide new one in with some wiggling!

Comments about Imperial Fan Clutch - 7" Thermal Heavy Duty:

The fan clutch is the most overlooked component when diagnosing engine overheating and air-conditioning problems. Had issues with Dodge Durango 4.7 running hot and watching the temperature gauge creeping ever so higher at continual highway speeds. Along with the air-conditioning becoming less effective over time because less air passes throught the condenser coil and radiator. Being in the HVAC business, the first thing I checked was the fan clutch. Replaced it and problem solved. Engine runs cool and air-conditioning is awesome. Wheather it's 60 degees or 100 degrees outside, enging runs at close to the same temperature all the time. As long as your replacing the fan clutch, it's a good idea to flush the radiator and engine and check the hoses. A worn fan clutch can also cause premature wear on the transmission and power steering because often the fan also cools those components as well.

Comments about Imperial Fan Clutch - 7" Thermal Heavy Duty:

The fan clutch was easy to install on my vehicle, however finding the necessary tools to remove the fan clutch assembly from the water pump was a different story. You can use a large adjustable wrench, or rent a tool, to break the nut loose from the water pump, however you also need a tool to hold the water pump pulley while you break the nut loose. That tool was nowhere to be found. If auto parts stores are going to sell parts that require specialty tools you would think they would also have the tools to allow you to do the job properly without having to improvise. ALL auto parts stores get a BIG thumbs down in that regard. I ended up having to buy a $50 pulley hold tool online to complete the job.

Comments about Imperial Fan Clutch - 7" Thermal Heavy Duty:

I read that it was recommended to replace the fan clutch when you change the water pump. So I bought the clutch, but the one I removed didn't seem to be bad at all. With 105k miles on my truck, it wouldn't hurt to change it anyway. The nut that attaches it to the water pump was not as deep as original (approx. 1/2"), and that moved the fan closer to the engine. However, there were no clearance issues once installed.

Comments about Imperial Fan Clutch - 7" Thermal Heavy Duty:

I purchased this as a replacement for my factory installed unit that has 138k mikes of service. Hope to get that type of life from this one. At startup this clutch is engaged and causes the fan to make a lot of noise as you take off. It does engage after a couple minutes of running and the fan quietes down. Other wise is direct replacement. Be sure to have the spanner wrench to hold the pump pulley. My store did not rent this item, but I was able to make one from a steel bar and three bolts for less than $6.

Hi Lou, great question! Pop the hood. Unbolt the fan shroud from the core support using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Move it out of the way so you can access the fan. Set the pry bar on the water pump pulley, just behind the engine fan. Set the pry bar between two of the bolts on the pulley to hold it steady and stop it from turning. Attempt to turn the fan by hand to make sure the pry bar is holding the pump steady. Remove the hex-head bolt behind the fan using an open-end wrench. Turn it off of the pulley, then lift the fan and clutch out of the engine. Unbolt the fan from the clutch using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

With reference to your inquiry on the Imperial Fan Clutch - 7" Thermal Heavy Duty - Part No. 215127 the fan will rotate constantly regardless. The clutch engages and locks the blade to it so that it spins faster than normal the hotter that it gets. The only time that your fan will not spin is when the motor is off. However if the rotation is noisy you will have to check the fan clutch again as it might be defective. I would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis before buying and having parts installed that may not (solve/be) the problem. For any further assistance please feel free to call us at: 1-877-238-2623 or visit the nearest Advance Auto Parts store and one of our Parts Pros will gladly assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.
