All I had to adjust was the idle mixture screws, about a half a turn each. 73 Mustang Mach 1 with 351w, mild cam, headers and electronic ignition. Went from an oversized double pumper to this model. Drivability is very noticeably increased and the car has never ran better. Pulls 15 inches at idle and I'm sure gas mileage will go up. This is a great carburetor!

installed on my 83' monte carlo ss at same time as an accel distributor with manual vaccuum advance, got rid of undesired extra wires to give engine cleaner looks and easier to work on. IT worked great for alittle over one year then the inside of one of the bowls metal dipping was flaking off!!!! stock car, 93 octane gas, wow, why did carb paint start flaking off inside bowl just after the warranty!!! so if your carb starts sounding like a waterpump bearing going out then it might be the carb's cheap dipping trying to clog the opening. good luck to all

        Comments about Holley Street Carburetor:

I had a 30 year old carburator on the car and it always gave me problems. It had the old style choke that operated off the manifold. The performance was just ok. What a difference this Holley made. Easier to start, more power and only a minor adjustment. I did not like the cheap gasket sent with the unit (was bent and folded in the box) and purchased a quality gasket. Great item for the money spent!!!

Makes my 1986 f-250 fun to drive again. Carbs was easy to install and the truck runs great, having the chrome look is a very nice touch. The weight has to be more than half of the last carb. Its so nice now to hit the gas once and have the truck start and stay running. Definitely worth the price.

                1 answer

                • CUSTOMER CARE

                  A:

Yes, Joe, the carburetor adjustments may not be properly set to insure correct engine performance. Also, backfiring through the carburetor (spitting or coughing) usually occurs in the morning when a carburetor air/fuel mixture is a bit too lean. This usually goes away once the engine warms-up. It is also commonly caused by the accelerator pump in the carburetor, not squirting enough fuel before the main jets start working. If you spit the instant you blip the throttle it is probably the accelerator pump in the carburetor, not working, plugged up or out of adjustment. As with backfiring, coughing or spitting can also be caused by a bad ignition system, such as cross firing, which sends a spark to a cylinder that has the intake valve open. When that plug sparks out of turn, it lights the fuel in the cylinder and the pressure has to go somewhere. So if the intake valve is open, it goes right back up through the intake manifold and out the carburetor with a "spit" and sometimes even a flame. Backfiring is also caused by a spark plug, "sparking" when it isn't its turn and the exhaust valve is open. Backfiring can also be cause by a cracked distributor cap, or one that has carbon tracking inside which causes cross firing between the terminals inside, which in turn, sends spark to a spark plug that isn't ready for it yet. However, I would suggest that you take your vehicle and get it thoroughly checked by a certified mechanic before buying any parts that may/may not solve the problem.

                  A:

Hi Bob, I'm glad to assist you! This carburetor have been designed and calibrated as a universal replacement carburetor for passenger cars and light truck applications equipped with V-6 and V-8 engines. It is designed for use on “square” flange intake manifolds. Carburetor adapters are not recommended to adapt to “spread” bore intake manifolds, since adapters may have an adverse affect on cylinder-to-cylinder distribution and ultimately, total engine performance. This carburetor is 50-state emission legal replacement carburetor for 1965-69 V-8 applications. In California, those vehicles must have been originally equipped with a four-barrel carburetor.

                  A:

I'm happy to help, Ed! This Holley Street Carburetor (Part No. 0-80457S) is compatible with a vehicle using the Turbo 350 transmission. The TH700R4 or TH200R4 will require the use of transmission kickdown cable bracket (Holley® P/N 20-95) and geometry corrector (Holley® P/N 20-121). Otherwise, SEVERE transmission damage WILL result. Depending on your accelerator bracket, you will need one of the following throttle studs: Holley® P/N 20-2, 20-38, or 20-40. This carburetor is not designed to work with ANY other automatic overdrive transmissions.

For proper adjustment of the GM automatic kickdown linkage, refer to the appropriate GM service manual for your application.
