          Inconsistent Quality

          By Head bolt headache

          from Luckyville

Comments about Felpro Head Bolt Set:

The quality of these bolts is inconsistent. I had to buy two sets because some bolts in the first set began to yield at 75-80 ft lbs, which is about the torque level when you do the 95 degree turn, and one bolt broke. So I decided to redo all of them. Fortunately there was enough of the broken bolt above the block to grasp with vice-grips so I could remove it easily. The second set tightened perfectly and consistently. Perhaps this had something to do with the new fel-pro gaskets having being pre-compressed from the first set of bolts? I don't know. If you think so then use your old bolts to torque the new gaskets to 44 ft lbs to settle the new gaskets, and then remove the old bolts and use your new bolts, 44 ft lbs first pass, then 95 degree turn final pass. Anyway, be sure to follow the tightening directions very closely because you only have about 10 ft lbs of difference between the correct torque and an overstretched bolt which is about to snap.

Second set I have used and never have issues. Just remember to install the shorter bolts outside the valve cover.

Not the best quality control 3 were faulty and had to use 3 of the used ones which is irritating since the reason I bought new was to make sure they would tighten down with the correct torque.

This set made the heads easier to reinstall and I feel better knowing I have new bolts in there. I had to drill out the one with the motor mount set pin so having ordered these was a great decision.

Are these Felpro bolts torque to yield? If not, then what amount of torque should these be torqued to? And what are the specifications of the bolts themselves, such as tensile strength and yield strength?

I would suggest you to refer your vehicle owner’s manual specifically for the head bolt torque specifications.

I have head gasket set HST9957PT2 with Fel-Pro PermaTorque Severe Duty head gasket. I am replacing the head gaskets on my 1998 Lumina, 3.1L SFI V6 OHV.
                        I am installing new Fel-Pro Torque-to-Yield head bolts, #ES72892.
Stated in Federal-Mogul Document #1425: "Fel-Pro Torque Tables, showing the proper torque sequence and torque specs, are available from Fel-Pro dealers."
What is the proper torque specs for these head bolts?
Are these torqued in 3 steps or 4 steps?

Are these Torque-to-Yield type head bolts? (Please do not answer unless you can answer with 100% certainty, as the answer is very critical to proper cylinder head torque.)
Since this bolt set is for a 3.1L GM V-6, what are the recommended torque specs for these bolts?
