      Hi Kerry, good question! This inverter is used to power small hand held power tools and appliances in your vehicle like televisions, gaming consoles and home electronics.

      The short answer: it depends. Battery size, age and how much juice you need to run your tools, crock pots, etc, all factor in to how long the battery will support the unit without running the engine. You can calculate run time by using Ohm's Law (Google it). This unit will shut down when there is not enough voltage from your vehicle's battery to run it, that makes a true test. For me, if I'm tailgating and running at full load, my engine will be running.
