Comments about Duplicolor Self Etching Primer, 12 oz, Aerosol:

This primer really bites into bare metal to give you a great surface for top coats. It holds well on aluminum as well, have aluminum wheels for over a year that look great, used this and the krylon rust tough. Dries quick for recoat and can be top coated after 20 minutes.

Used product on a rusty 20 yr old truck. After sanding down to bare metal, product covered and smoothed out most of the scratches and imperfections. Was found easy to use by a first time painter of a vehicle.

Comments about Duplicolor Self Etching Primer, 12 oz, Aerosol:

I used this as a primer on exterior aluminim trim that had faded badly. This primer ran easilly but was easy to sand out. I then sprayed with a good quality exterior spray on paint. Turned out great.

Comments about Duplicolor Self Etching Primer, 12 oz, Aerosol:

I used the self-etching primer to refinish an outside door mirror for my muscle car. The mirror was chromed but old and pitted. I wanted to paint it to match the car's body color. I sanded first using 80 grit paper then with 180. That removed/smoothed the chrome enough to use the primer. Following can direction, I sprayed 3 light coats I waited 5 minutes between coat. Letting mirror dry for 8 hours the finish was fantastic. Pits and sanding scratches gone. Time to apply the top coat.

I sanded my aluminum boat with a grinder down to fresh aluminum not having to do much work as far as using this duplicolor after i sanded i noticed the swirls in the aluminum from the grinder but i used a bit rougher sanding pad to work faster after i sanded just use meguair car wash rubbed it down then rinsed dried then sprayed brake part cleaner to let that evaporate up then sprayed the duplicolor self etch primer and man she look professionally done it even took out the swirls from the grinder and laid flat no gloss strong or foul smell but this was for a aluminum flat application so i will be looking to stock up on it to i think it has a good spray nozzle to great product for prepping metal to paint

I am going to be applying a polyurethane coating to the aluminum floor of my boat and they recommend I use a self etching primer before applying their product. Is this primer considered submersible? Will it work with the Durabek coating?

                A:

I'm happy to help, Fishman6007! This Duplicolor Self Etching Primer (Part No. DAP1690) is engineered for automotive use and will typically work best with the Duplicolor paint system. I see that the Durabak coating is recommended to be preceded by their metal etch primer for aluminum boats. Paints and primers for automotive use are typically going to be used on steel rather than aluminum.

Happy to help you Jim! This can not be used on exhausts and high temp applications. As long as the surface is clean and free of grease or oil then it should adhere to brass.
