I sprayed this and rustoleum's brand on a piece of sheet metal. Let dry overnight. I was able to rub off the rustoleum brand with my thumb the next day. Could not rub off the duplicolor. Far superior to rustoleum. Rustoleum brand also wore off my undercarriage in just a few months. Buy Duplicolor.

Comments about Duplicolor Professional Undercoat with Sound Eliminator, Black, 17 oz. Aerosol:

Followed the directions - first 1/3 of the can sprayed on well. Second 1/3 of the can sprayed on in globs and uneven spatters, despite repeated cleaning of the spray tip. The last 1/3 never came out of the can - had to throw it out because the tip kept clogging and there wasn't enough propellent left in the can. I orginally wanted to get 2 cans, but it was a good thing the store only had one on the shelf to keep me from wasting even more money.

I used it to undercoat the wheel wells for sound deadening purposes. There was some kind of undercoating applied by factory but it had worn off over the years. I used one can to undercoat the rear wheel wells (about two layers). It did make a difference, although it's probably not that dramatic. Planning to get another can to do the front wheel wells as well.

I have used this on the underside of my cars as well as under the carpet. When used in the interior under the carpet and it was uncovered I did notice some stuck to the underside of the carpet. It does soften with heat.

As for the underside of the vehicle... It softens very easy solvents... (gasoline, oils, transmission fluid, degreaser, etc...) I noticed this after such fluids spattered on the underside of the car. To remedy, I have reapplied and then top coated with duplicolor paint. This increases durability. This keeps the surface from getting soft. However if the Sound eliminator is thick enough you can still dent it with a hard object.

Yes, you should be able to just apply this to a clean metal surface. As long as the surfaces are clean this should apply with no problem. Always do a test area of paint first to check compatibility of the paint with the surface.
