Dries so fast it leaves overspray laps. Poor coverage, I used 5 spray cans for one small trunk lid and spoiler, and the clear coat still looks blotchy. The coating often sputtered when the cans got half empty and there always seems to be a little clear coat left in the can after the propellant has been used up.

Comments about Duplicolor Clear Top Coat:

I painted and clear coated the roof and hood of my regular cab pickup due to deterioration of the original clear coat. I wasn't expecting a fatory finish but I had hoped to keep the truck looking decent. The finish looks terrible, like it was painted with cheap rattle cans. The product dried before it could flow together to cover the surface, leaving a generally rough sandy surface. The spray can just doesn't seem to produce enough flow volume to get a glossy finish. I even sanded and redid it and the results were no better. The job was a complete waste of time and money. This product might work OK for small parts but I would not recommend it for a complete body panel.

Contacted Duplicolor and they blamed me for applying incorrectly. Took them 3 days to tell me that. If I am to be blamed it for stupidity to think this cheap jund would work!!

After water sanding to 2000 grit and thorough cleaning, applied 4 coats. Gloss does not match factory clear coat. Moreover, the finish dissolves with alcohol, which the factory clear coat resists. This is not by far a good product.

Comments about Duplicolor Clear Top Coat:

The protective clear coat sprayed on great and laid on smooth, but once dried it was not as shiny as i expected it to be. The actual paint had more of a shine to it than the clear coat did. I ended up having to wet sand and polish the fender several times to get enough shine so it did not look like i cheaped out and just sprayed it with plain flat black paint...
If i would have known that the protective clear coat wasn't going to dry to the same sheen as the base coat of paint did i would not have used it...

Used some 3 cans to do the hood one of my cars, about 20 square feet. Coverage was rather uneven and there was a lot of orange peel. A good deal of wet sanding was able to fix that to get a convincing look, but the finish only lasted about six months. UV fading, peeling and water spotting started to show up after about 3 months. This 'protective' clear coat can't even protect itself, much less the paint it covers - especially when considering that it costs more for a smaller can than many competitors' products.

                            • Q:

I painted my truck's hood with the "factory" Duplicolor color and then went over it with the Clear Top Coat. Portions are shiny but other areas are rough looking, with the characteristic appearance of a spray can paint job. What can be done about this? Some sort of sanding or buffing to get a more uniform finish?

                                A:

It's sounds like a neat project, Dan! It may be that you've experienced something called dry spray, which occurs when you hold the tip too far from the surface being coated and the droplets begin to dry before they hit the surface. Dry spray is more likely to occur when the temperature is high, humidity is low, or when using a water-based coating.

A sandy or rough surface is a good indication of dry spray. Many times a light sanding will smooth the rough surface and remove any poorly adhered droplets to prep the it for another coat. When applying the additional coat, be sure to hold the nozzle close enough to the surface so the paint floods the surface. This doesn't mean you want to apply the paint heavily (which may run or drip), but so that the individual droplets will meld together so the surface is being completely wetted with the paint.
