After painting the calipers on my last 5-6 cars using hi-temp spray paint (and never really being satisfied), I decided to try something different this time and use the Duplicolor Brush kit. The question I'm asking myself now is "Why did I wait so long to switch?"

Before I get into the positives, I have to warn potential buyers...the brush included in the kit is WORTHLESS. After literally the first brush stroke I had to pick 6 brush hairs out of the paint. The 2nd stroke left 4 more. Fortunately I had other brushes from a previous project. So if necessary, stop by a craft-hobby store and purchase a pack of small brushes.

Admittedly I was a bit apprehensive during the first coat (I did 4 coats overall). Even after switching to a good brush, the paint applies very thin and "streaky". Regret began to seep in quickly as I was fearful that I would have ugly paint-lines when finished. However as the paint dried, it "self leveled" and smoothed out. After 3 coats, I had a very nice smooth, glossy finish, with no bare caliper metal showing through. As a precaution and for the sake of durability, I added a 4th coat. When complete, the final results almost resemble what you would get from powder-coating...a very consistent, high-gloss, glass smooth finish. As an additional feature, I purchased a set of Brembo Decals (off a well known online auction site) and applied those to the calipers. I am VERY pleased with the final results (especially considering the price of Duplicolor compared to powder-coating) and have gotten numerous compliments over the past couple of months.

Regarding longevity and durability, again it's only been 2 months, but thus far the gloss and shine remain strong with no degradation. Brake dust washes right off (unlike spray painted calipers which trapped the dust in the rough textured finish and required scrubbing to remove).

Some application notes to consider:
- The paint dries relatively quickly. On 75 deg. evening in the shade of my garage, drying time was about 18-20 min.
- I recommend that if possible, put the car on jackstands at all 4 corners and have all 4 calipers "pre-prepped" (Meaning, remove all 4 tires, thoroughly clean and tape off all 4 calipers/rotors). Once the painting begins, this will permit you to rotate from caliper to caliper quickly, and prevent your brush from drying/hardening while you prep the next caliper. This also helps expedite the overall process. By the time you complete the 4th caliper, the 1st one is completely dry and immediately ready for the next coat. No need to sit by idly wasting time. If it's not possible to do all 4 corners, then at least have 2 calipers prepped, and bounce back and forth between them, having to wait only a few minutes for drying time.

Great value--I did my car's calipers with just one kit, and half can left over. Paint color vibrant, and looks durable, as I did 4 coats. I was aggravated though when I had all 4 wheels up, and the brush fell apart on my 3rd coat. Of course, I didn't have any extra hobby brushes at home, so had to walk 2 miles to get. Aggravating as heck that they don't supply a better brush or two....right off the bat I had to pick loose hairs out of the paint. So, my thoughts, great kit...did the job good, but pick up an extra quality brush!!

Comments about Duplicolor Caliper Kit, Red, 8 oz. Half-Pint/Aerosol Kit:

Open the box and immediately throw away the masking tape and paint brush - tape doesn't stick to anything or even stick to itself and brush falls apart leaving bristles in the paint. I bought an identical brush from my local PPG store for $2 and it held together. Stir the paint very well, apply a thin first coat, let set up for a half hour, apply a heavy second coat, and give it a day to harden before handling. Happy with the results - nice shine and paint fills casting flaws and surface roughness. Smoothing your calipers and brackets using a die grinder with sanding rolls would achieve a mirror-like finish if you want ultimate detail and have the time to invest.

the entire kit is garbage! perhaps i have a bad batch of paint but it is way to thick to achieve a smooth clean natural look. after painting 2 calipers I decieded to hose em down with brake cleaner to get as much off as possible. tomorrow once dry i get to wire brush these yet again. complete garbage!

Like everyone else said, the brush is terrible. I was able to finish the job with the supplied brush but it seemed like every stroke left a hair in the paint. I recommend getting a higher quality brush just to avoid aggravation. I did 3-4 coats on each caliper with 5min dry time between each coat and got great results. This is the type of paint you can apply heavy and not have to worry too much about runs. In my opinion, the heavier the coat, the better - this will allow you to use fewer coats.

It made the brake calipers look great, pay attention to instructions as recoat time is 1 hour OR 5 days. If you don't follow this it states the paint may lift/peel. Pick up a decent paint brush as the one supplied starts falling apart, leaving bristols in the paint. Paint goes on easily and dries quickly. I used paint thinner to clean up brushes and any mess. This is the second set I have done and can say that it holds up well over time as it was approximately 16 monthes since the first paint job and they still look excellant.

Use as directed!!! paint 2nd coat in 15 min- its laquer paint so it drys quickly- a good brush will produce a better result - clean wheels very well first with cleaner as indicated. I had 1/4 can of paint left over after 4 coats on 4 calipers- Jag - very large calipers on front, normal size on rear, actually better results than I expected
