I have replaced this type item on other vehicles and not had to do any additional maintenance. However, with this particular part I had to have the front end aligned due to the dimensional differences. It was hot an exact replacement.

Replacement went great until I cinched the castle nut onto the rod. I was expecting the cotter pin to fit within the openings of the castle nut, which would lock the nut. Instead, the nut is a good bit "above" the pin. Could I have tightened it too much? Shouldn't the "taper" of the rod match the taper of the wheel knuckle, preventing over-tightening?

Glad to be of assistance! Yes, it is possible that you may have over tightened the castle nut, you may let the nut back off a bit so that the pin does go through.

The tie rod is part of the steering mechanism in a vehicle. A tie rod is a slender structural rod that is used as a tie and capable of carrying tensile loads only.
A tie rod consists of an inner and an outer end.
