Gave it 5 stars but just put it in last week so time will tell although I see no reason to doubt its performance over the long run. Looks and works like the original.

Fit well into my 1999 GMC Safari. Starts right up. Had a extra bolt on top that made me wonder what it was for. Seems like van has a little extra noise now.

Comments about Driveworks Starter - Remanufactured:

It looked good when I took it out of the box. I followed the instructions in my Haynes manual and the instructions included with the starter. This start has no shims needed for installation on my 1999 GMC Sonoma 4.3L X Engine with AC, Automatic, 2WD. It simply bolts up to the bosses on the engine. While it does start my truck every time, it grinds like when some bozo tries to start an already running engine EVERY TIME I RELEASE THE KEYSWITCH. It seems to me the spring for retracting the sprocket might be too weak or broken. It is probably going to go back to the store and I'll spend another 2 hours under the truck.

                    A:

Hi Cindy, good question! It depends upon the skill level of the person performing the operation. For help with your project, I recommend purchasing a Haynes repair manual specifically for your vehicle. This should be able to assist you further into detail on how to repair or replace specific parts.

                    A:

Hi Electricjim, Absolutely. Oil can leak down the engine and coat the terminals of the starter. Over time, the oil becomes a thick grease that can conduct current and effectively short or overload the battery when you attempt to start the car. I would suggest that you take your vehicle and get it thoroughly checked by a certified mechanic before buying any parts that may/may not solve the problem.

Would a bad starter cause my van to crank but not start at times? and also suddenly cut off while driving when it has started?

                    A:

With reference to your inquiry on the Driveworks Starter - Remanufactured - Part No. 6485, some symptoms of bad starter are the car will not start, but all dashboard lights/headlights will come on. No noise can be heard when turning the key to the START position. The car will have slow or labored cranking. Sometimes it will have just enough power to start the car, other times, it won't even crank. If you try turning the motor several times over and smell electrical-based smoke because of this shorting out issue, your starter is probably bad.
