Comments about Driveworks Solenoid for Small Engines:

Replaced the solenoid on a Scotts (Murray) tractor. Everything fit fine and works as good or better than original at half the cost. Made one change, used the screw terminal instead of the spade terminal for the start lead as it made a much better connection than the original. It does have a spade adapter if you choose not to change the wiring on your machine.

Comments about Driveworks Solenoid for Small Engines:

The screw conectors are of a different size than the original. Had to srip the original wire and install a different size connector for it to be used. The mounting plate is the same as the original. The order was placed online and was available for pickup at my local store. The store clerk was very helpfull and they had the part waiting for me. This part was used as a replacement part on a Murray Ultra riding lawn tractor. I paid about 8 dollars for the item, which was lower than several competitors.

This looks like the same exact solenoid sold for Craftsman/Murray mowers, at about 2/3 the price.

            • Q:

How do you determine the + and the - terminals on the new starter solenoid, there are no markings or differences in the terminals? Does + and - even matter on this part? Will incorrect placement of cables create a short of the solenoid?

                A:

Hi Chris, good question! A solenoid is a coil of wire with a shaft through the middle of it. When it runs current through the coil it creates an electromagnetic field that moves the shaft, which then moves the throw out bearing on the starter against the gears on the flywheel. The solenoid will not matter which way the current goes through it. In fact there is nothing there to create a spark. It is ignition protected and cannot blow anything up.

We have a ford focus 2009 with a starting problem. It seems to run in cycles. The dealer wants to take the whole dash apart to search for the problem. We've tried different keys, opening the gas tank removing the battery cable to reset the computer. It acts like a solinaoid or started issue. please help

Without the presence of your vehicle, we are unable to diagnose the exact problem in the vehicle. I would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis before buying and having parts installed that may not (solve/be) the problem.

I would like to know from someone who has used or knows whether this specific Solenoid will work on an ATV? Specifically Polaris Sportsman 500. This unit looks to be exactly what I've got existing on mine right now; it clicks when I try to crank it. I was hoping it was just the battery, but now this.
