I only replaced my original alternator because it made noise - could hear it over my radio on the freeway. The first one is much quieter, but still loud enough that I shut my truck off at a drive up window. I take it in to exchange it for a good one, 1 week later. The empoyee informs me that Advance's policy is that they will not exchange parts only for noise. I had the alternator in hand and turned it to make the nails on a chalkboard sound for the employee. He held firm that Advance considered it "good". After much discussion, and many comments under his breath, I ended up getting it exchanged. The new one chirps like a bird but still quieter than the original, or my first reman. The employee was clear that its the best I can expect.
"If you buy an alternator, starter or any other part from Advance that makes noise but still does its primary function, don't bring it in because we won't exchange it. Its Advance policy." -Was the employee's exact comment.

The alternator was listed as a perfect fit for my vihicle and it was. All I had to do was unplug the old one, unbolt it, and then bolt the new one on and plug it in. No changing electrical plugs or anything like that. I really appreciate the on line look up help that Advance Auto on line ordering has available. It made choosing the exact fit alternator a breeze. I also appreciated that my alternator was immediately available at the Advance Auto store that is only about a half mile from my home. The whole job including ordering, pickup, and replacement only took about an hour. Thanks Advance.

                          A:

Hi Joe, glad to assist you! Before going to procedure, lightly rap on all relays with a screwdriver handle, a sticking relay can cause all kinds of problems. Here is the test procedure for determining battery or alternator problem after requiring a jump start. This requires a voltmeter. Check battery voltage on non-start vehicle. Will probably be under 12V. Verify good clean connections, look for cracked corroded or loose terminals. Jump start, always have the jumper vehicle running when performing a jump start. With jumper cables removed, engine running, check voltage at battery. It should be 12.8V to 13.7V. If below 12.8V the alternator or voltage regulator are suspect. If in the range, the battery is either dead, low on water or in need of a full charge. If over 14.7V the voltage regulator is not functioning properly. Failing those problems, with the vehicle shut off & the doors closed, disconnect the battery ground cable, put a 12V test light between the battery negative & a known good ground. If it lights, something, like an interior or glove box lamp, is staying on. Remove fuses 1 at a time to find the problem circuit. However, I would suggest you to get assistance from a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis before buying and having parts installed that may not solve or be the problem.
