Comments about Dorman - OE Solutions Steering Shaft Repair Kit:

Good fit but there was no instructions or diagram provided, the pieces in my original unit hit the floor when I took it apart, so I couldn't tell how it was supposed to go. Luckily I found a picture of one online somewhere. Also, the clip tabs that are supposed to keep the dust cover on were to short to lock in properly so I sealed around the edges with some RTV.

        how to install this part

          A:

Happy to help, Lisa! This part is simple to install with no special tools required. Remove 2 bolts holding the rubber/cloth coupling to the lower shaft and remove the tire for access. Drive out roll pin, don't hit too hard without using a steel block to jam between the steering box shaft and the frame, or you will hammer the roller bearings in the steering box. Pull the shaft and coupling off the splined steering box input shaft, then remove the retainer and rubber cover, use a punch to knock the retainer pin near the "mouth" of the coupler out of the way, and pull steering shaft out of the coupler box. Clean out grease, and drill then tap for a grease zerk near the roll pin end so you can grease the coupler in the future, and also use grease to force out any water that gets in. Replace sintered iron "shoes" and reassemble coupler with new moly wheel bearing grease/aluminum complex. Tap retainer pin back into place, install rubber seal and retainer and slide coupler onto steering box input shaft being careful to rotate so the splines match correctly so the roll pin goes in without interference. Install a new roll pin then reinstall two bolts holding cloth/rubber coupling to lower steering shaft.

          A:

Yes, this part Dorman - OE Solutions Steering Shaft Repair Kit, Part No. 425-253 fits your 1986 Dodge Ramcharger. REPAIR PROCEDURE: 1.Remove and discard the existing cover and seal., 2. Disassemble the coupler and inspect the shoes, shoe retaining spring, internal bearing surfaces of the coupler body, and the shaft pin for evidence of wear. Replace any worn components., 3. Fill the coupler body 1/2 full with Multipurpose Grease., 4. Place the boot and clamp on the shaft. , 5. Press the shoe pin onto the steering shaft so that it projects equal distance on the shaft., 6. Place the spring on the side of the shaft, straddling the shoe pin., 7. Place the shoes on the pin ends with the flat side towards the spring, engaging the tangs., 8. Squeeze the shoes together, compressing the spring, and push the assembly into the coupler body with the master spline on the upper shaft., 9. Drive in the NEW dowel pin flush with the outer surface of the coupler body., 10. Position the boot on the body and install the clamps on both ends. Be sure that the contact surfaces are free of grease., 11. Work the shaft in and out several times to distribute the grease in the assembly. NOTE: For your shaft to come out of the housing, you need to remove the little pin in the side of the housing (you can use a small punch and drive it right on through into the grease). Also, to remove the pin in the end of the shaft, you need proper tools, if you don't have the proper tools take to the local machine shop and get the job done. replace it with the new one in the kit, put your new rubber boot and keeper plate on the shaft before you install this pin.

Is the installation of this pretty straight forward? I can't find any instruction for how the parts are assembled inside the coupling.

It is pretty simple, just watch how the old one comes apart. if it was wore really badly it might have wore out the inside of the coupler housing also
