Comments about Dorman - OE Solutions Ignition Key Lock Cylinder:

Ford had known bad ignition cylinders in the Focus from 2000-2003. They refused to do a recall. This design from Dorman is much better design. Easy to put together. This design comes with plenty of tumblers which allow you to keep your original keys. This means you don't have to have the computer reprogrammed to new keys. The instructions can be a little confusing.

When I had a need to replace my Ignition Lock Cylinder I thought I might not be able to and should go with the pros. But this was an easy job even that I had to do it the hard way. Once I drilled out the old one this one install easily and works great.

Better than the stock tumbler from Ford! I used a paper clip (a pick would be ideal) to remove the old tumblers. Bust out a magnifying glass if you are far sighted to read the microscopic numbers on the tumblers.

Comments about Dorman - OE Solutions Ignition Key Lock Cylinder:

The product description said that it would come with a new key and be keyed for it. There was no new key, but I wanted to re-key to match my old one anyway. With only 5 tumbler types in 7 slots, it took about 30 min to make sure I matched it correctly. The hardest part was removing the old lock cylinder.

My 2009 Ford Focus has an intermittant no crank no start problem.
I can jiggle the key and get it to start on the problem occasions.
How do I decide if the cause is the Ignition switch or the Key Lock Cylinder?

Hi John! As there may be different reasons for this starting problem, without the presence of your vehicle we would not be able to properly diagnose it, nor provide you with a 100% answer. However, I would suggest that you take your vehicle and get it thoroughly checked by a certified mechanic before buying any parts that may/may not solve the problem.

My package didn't come with instructions. YouTube has helped me figure out how to pick the correct tumblers out of the five packages that came with it, but I cannot figure out how to put the springs in. Can you email me instructions for this?

                  Thanks! Carrie

I have the infamous problem with lock not turning. I still have the original key and just need a new lock cylinder. If I understand correctly I should be able to replace the old cylinder with this one, rekey it to the old (original) key and it will work as though nothing ever happened. True!

                  Thx.

Hi Tom! Yes, you are correct. You would just recode the cylinder to the original key and it will work just like the original cylinder. The recoding instructions will be included with the cylinder and here is a link to a video showing it step by step. It shows a Chrysler cylinder but the steps are exactly the same:

                • Q:

1 The reason for purchasing this product is simple the original key has been misplaced, and that a blank key had been cut in advance to the spec's of the igniation lock cylinder's key. However the newly cut key will only open doors etc and will not start the engine.,Why will the cut key not start the engine and is this the norm, I had been told that the original key had a chip or something inplanted in it.

2 As I read the description of this unit, am I to understand that the original ignition lock cylinder, can be removed and that the installation of this unit will allow the vehicle to not only be started but that it also eliminates the need for for a back up key to just open the doors.

Is there any more info or tools that I will require to replace the original ignition lock cylinder.

                  thanks

Instructions on how to replace the Ignition switch: Remove the plastic trim covers on the steering column from inside the passenger compartment by turning out the holding screws on the underside of the column with a Philips screwdriver in a counterclockwise direction. Set the trim covers and screws aside. Straighten out a paper clip and insert one end of it into the hole on the side of the ignition cylinder facing the driver. Pull the ignition cylinder out towards the left hand side of the car once the paper clip releases the pin that holds the cylinder in place. Remove the key from the old cylinder and place it into the new ignition switch. Push the switch assembly into the cavity that the old switch was removed from until it locks into place. Turn the key to the OFF position and remove it if desired. Replace the plastic trim covers and tighten the holding screws in a clockwise direction with a Philips screwdriver. Alternately, by supplying a locksmith or your Ford dealer with the vehicle identification number (VIN) and proof of ownership, they can build a new ignition switch for you so that your original keys will work in it. Your old switch is not needed to accomplish this. For any further assistance please feel free to call 1-877-238-2623 and one of our representatives will gladly assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.

the cut key will not start it because the original key does have a chip in it. its kind of surprising that you could even have a copy of that key made honestly

This lock kit allows you to rekey the cylinder to match your original key so only one key operates all locks. You lost the programmed key so you don't have the original key. You will have to get 2 chipped keys cut and programmed or leave the keys that come with the lock keyed and have them programmed to your car. There will be no way to get around programming since you don't have a key that is programmed to the car already.
