I was nervous about ordering the Dorman based on the previous post here about how others had to grind and do modifications because the manifold was not the same thickness as the intake. But i guess Dorman has re-engineered the mold. The areas of concerned where the hardware connects to the intake has been milled down to the same thickness. I also went with the factory recommendation of not using the head-to-manifold gasket. I used the intake-to-head gasket and everything worked great. I hope that this helps others, i know I was worried about it. The manifold that I replaced was a Dorman and it was the older style that wasn't a good fit. Kudos to Dorman for fixing the issue!

I had to heavily modify this exhaust manifold to make it fit!!!

The first problem was that I couldn't get the top center bolt in because the heat shield was in the way blocking the bolt from going in far enough to catch...
The second thing i found i had to do was oblong the bolt mounting holes so i could get all of the bolts to go back in the head straight...
The third thing that needed to be done to this exhaust manifold was, I had to grind about 1/4" off of the "bars" that connect the tubes so that the intake manifold could sit back over the alignment dowels in the head...
the last thing was I had to cut come shims out of washers to make the difference up from the exhaust manifold flange being thicker than the intake flange...

This part has an extra steel heat shield that prevented direct replacement of the OEM part. I had to knock off the rivets that hold the heat shield on and remove the heat shield in order to make this part fit.

Comments about Dorman - OE Solutions Exhaust Manifold Kit:

As others have stated its NOWHERE NEAR a direct fit replacement, the manifold is way thicker than the OEM one so you have to grind the edges where the washers sit so the intake manifold is clamped properly. This alone blows the book time away. otherwise its fine, just be ready to get creative with washers/grinding to make it bolt down right. That being said it DOES function like an exhaust manfold should.....

terrible fit. major time spent making it work. produtivity killer. if you do not have die grinder and multiple size bits it will not fit a 96 jeep.have to make offset washers to hold intake down as they have a major thickness difference. intake will just float with oe washers.

bolts up to stock - although you need to keep exhaust and intake manifolds both loose when installing to get the exhaust manifold to fit properly.

The gasket is good, seems to be a good upgrade from stock.

I needed a replacement exhaust manifold for my Jeep and checked out a few online sites. By far, the Advance Auto price was the best offer out there. I was a little hestitant about the claim that it was a direct fit, (I've been burned before on those types of claims) but based on my previous dealing with Advance Auto I took the chance. They had it in stock, which was surprise, and at a store that was not too far away. The kit came with the hardware and instructions and was easy to install (after all the prep work needed to expose the manifold of course). The Jeep runs and sounds like new again. I'd highly recommend the kit for anyone who needs it!

Jeep recommends not using a gasket for this manifold on my 2000 wrangler, however it's tough to find an exact replacement for only the intake manifold gasket. I used the combination gasket supplied with this Exaust manifold, its been on for almost a month now with no issues.(make sure to clean all surfaces before replacing gasket and I strongly recommend replacing hardware!!) Although the OE manifold doesnt include a heat shield, it cetainly doesnt hurt and I havent run into any issues with it getting in the way.

The manifold was just as expected, fit perfectly. My only complaint is that the new nuts that came with it were coarse threaded and not compatible with my Jeep Wrangler engine studs. Be aware in case you don't have the originals.

                          • Q:

There's a metal plate on the left side (in the picture). It is held in by two bolts. Mine is loose and besides ringing like a bell exhaust is leaking out from behind it. If I press it to the manifold with a screw driver the noises, ringing and exhaust, go away. What's the purpose of the plate and can I just tighten it to seal the leak?

                            Thanks!

                              A:

An internal vacuum passage in the carburetor draws air past the sheet metal plate attached to the side of the exhaust manifold. I hope this is the part you are referring to. Please check the torque on the manifold bolts. You might also need an automotive stethoscope to listen up close and compare with other areas. The leak might only get worse along with the sound. I would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis before buying and having parts installed that may not (solve/be) the problem.
