I installed this boot kit on my 1991 Toyota Camry, 4-cylinder sedan. It was not difficult, just time consuming. It is an inexpensive alternative to axle replacement. Though it may take about 4 hours to complete, it does have many advantages for the home mechanic over axle replacment if done correctly. You will avoid removal of ball joint and control rod, a possible axle bracket removal, a possible stuck axle in transmission, oil running out of transmission, adding oil to transmission, etc. You can also avoid a wheel alignment to compensate for the new axle's installation. AT Advance Auto, a new axle from a store would cost about $60 and the whole job done by an auto shop would have been about $325. The alignment would run about $80 extra.

Truly an international product: The boot is made in India, clamps are from China, and grease from England.
When you purchase the kit, check to make sure the instructions are there - many other reviewers report that they were missing. My instructions were also missing but a friendly clerk at the local Advance Auto store gave me a copy.

First, check the kit right away to make sure all parts are there including the instructions. My kit came in a blister pack and could have been opened by a previous customer.

Really good video instructions on this kit can be found on Youtube. That video emphasizes clean hands and practice fitting the two halves together. When the halves are glued together, work the two halves together from the center outward toward each end rather than starting from one end.

When putting the boot on the axle, put the narrow (inner) end on first and then work toward wide end - it goes on easier this way.

The boot comes with 2 tiny tubes of glue ("solvent"). One should be enough for gluing both sides together. Use the other tube for gluing the end ring and collar. Use adequately, but sparingly. The 2 tubes were just enough for me. The instructions give a toll free number to call for more glue (and advice).

I used the clamps and they went on okay - some others report using nylon cable ties which problably would be easier to put on.

So far the boot has not ripped (a week's use). I will post an update after the weather gets cold to see if it becomes brittle and breaks up then. If it does not hold up, I will adjust my rating appropriately.

This product is terrible. I tried to use it. All the solvent weld was used up with just the halves and there are Three other parts that need it. Halves don't go together well in the limited space (Oh Yeah, can't get grease on the seam in an area that has grease all over). Not fun. after the hour to wait. I gave it an hour and a half. When I tried to pull the boot over the axle joint the boot separated. NOW WHAT? Just buy the axle and don't mess with the poor excuse of a repair product. Worst experience yet with self help products.

It was advertised as an exact fit - not so. Practice putting it together several times prior to gluing.
Check fit on car. I had to cut some of the boot off on the wheel end. I found the claps too hard to use. I could not get them tight enough. If you have a lift & can work from underneath the car then they may be better. Take a string and measure what size clamps you will need. DO NOT go by the old size clamps. I ended up using hose clamps on mine. I would use again but only to save the money!

This is a universal kit. So it may work well on some cars but not on my t-100.#1 not enough glue.#2 almost impossible to not get grease on the boot.#3 clamps are real cheap break very easy.#4when istalling the wedge/cone it wont stay in the small end of the boot when tightning the small clamp. So this was a waist of time.It was less hasle pulling everything apart and installing the one piece boot.If this was made for my specific vehicle it might have worked.

Boot was installed on a 1991 Camry. If you have the time, this is a good alternative to changing the axle - you avoid removing the ball joint, control arm, and possible mid-joint, running into an stuck axle that won't come our of the transmission, watching transmission oil run out, adding oil to the transmisson, etc. Practice assembling two halves before gluing. Watch video on Youtube by mechcanada - it is excellent. Don't rush the job, it make take about 4 hours or so including the wait for the glue solvent to cure. The clamps are okay, you need pliers to pull on the strap and maybe a screwdriver to hold the clamp in place before tightening. Overall, this is worth a try for those who are reluctant to attempt an axle removal or can't afford having a mechanic do it.

What is the order to install the small end of boot? Please confirm that from axle outward: edge adapter -> ring -> boot small end. Do I need to have put solvent between edge adapter and ring and between ring and boot small end?

                      A:

That's a great question, Auto Fan. The split collar will go into the end of the boot and the 2 bushing halves will get wrapped around the shaft with the fingers interlocking. Then you slide the bushing down the shaft and as far into the boot as it will go and then you will install the clamp. Yes the order mentioned in your query would be exact. There is no need of solvent, instead the clamp will hold it.

With respect to your inquiry on the Dorman - OE Solutions C.V. Joint Solvent Welded Split Boot Kit Outer - Part No. 614-632, there is no need to pull the axle out. You will just have to remove the old boot and install this split boot kit. The glue-together seam must be perfectly clean when the glue is applied for a good bond. A small speck of dirt or any grease on either surface will weaken the seam and may cause it to fail. The boot must be left undisturbed for up to an hour while the adhesive cures. Otherwise the seam will not hold.
