I installed this boot kit on my 1991 Toyota Camry, 4-cylinder sedan. It was not difficult, just time consuming. It is an inexpensive alternative to axle replacement. Though it may take about 4 hours to complete, it does have many advantages for the home mechanic over axle replacment if done correctly. You will avoid removal of ball joint and control rod, a possible axle bracket removal, a possible stuck axle in transmission, oil running out of transmission, adding oil to transmission, etc. You can also avoid a wheel alignment to compensate for the new axle's installation. AT Advance Auto, a new axle from a store would cost about $60 and the whole job done by an auto shop would have been about $325. The alignment would run about $80 extra.

Truly an international product: The boot is made in India, clamps are from China, and grease from England.
When you purchase the kit, check to make sure the instructions are there - many other reviewers report that they were missing. My instructions were also missing but a friendly clerk at the local Advance Auto store gave me a copy.

First, check the kit right away to make sure all parts are there including the instructions. My kit came in a blister pack and could have been opened by a previous customer.

Really good video instructions on this kit can be found on Youtube. That video emphasizes clean hands and practice fitting the two halves together. When the halves are glued together, work the two halves together from the center outward toward each end rather than starting from one end.

When putting the boot on the axle, put the narrow (inner) end on first and then work toward wide end - it goes on easier this way.

The boot comes with 2 tiny tubes of glue ("solvent"). One should be enough for gluing both sides together. Use the other tube for gluing the end ring and collar. Use adequately, but sparingly. The 2 tubes were just enough for me. The instructions give a toll free number to call for more glue (and advice).

I used the clamps and they went on okay - some others report using nylon cable ties which problably would be easier to put on.

So far the boot has not ripped (a week's use). I will post an update after the weather gets cold to see if it becomes brittle and breaks up then. If it does not hold up, I will adjust my rating appropriately.

THIS PRODUCT IS JUST PLAIN JUNK! IF I COULD GIVE IT A 0 RATING I WOULD. THE WEBSITE SAYS IT WILL FIT MY 1997 DODGE DAKOTA SO I WENT TO THE CLOSEST STORE IN MYRTLE BEACH AND HAD THE GUY DOUBLE CHECK, HE LOOKED IT UP AND TWICE I WAS TOLD IT WOULD FIT. SO I WENT AHEAD AND BOUGHT IT. AFTER WAITING THE FIRST HOUR FOR THE ONE SIDE TO BOND I ATTEMPTED TO PUT AROUND MY AXLE. THE "WELD" BROKE AND I HAD TO RE-WELD IT AND WAIT ANOTHER HOUR(MEANWHILE I RAN OUT OF CEMENT THAT WAS PROVIDED) THEIRS ANOTHER TRIP TO THE STORE FOR SOME EPOXY. AFTER I GOT IT TO WORK (LEFT IT TO DRY WELL OVER NIGHT) I TRIED TO PULL LARGE END OVER MY HUB AS INSTRUCTED TO, WILL NOT FIT! SO AFTER ABOUT 4 HOURS OF WORKING ON IT AND A DAY WITH MY TRUCK STUCK ON A JACK I'M REQUIRED TO GO BACK TO THE STORE AND TRY TO RETURN IT AND GET THE OE PRODUCT! PLEASE DO YOURSELVES A FAVOR AND BUY THE REAL ONE AND TAKE A LITTLE EXTRA TIME TO REMOVE THE HUB TO INSTALL. YOU WILL SAVE YOURSELVES A LOT OF AGGRAVATION

Very hard to install. Difficult to keep grease off ends to be glued. The small fingers to be install on the boot move while trying to glue them and clamps where not the same as in the directions. Very hard to tightens them. Also packaging poor had to check because parts where missing.

Did not fit properly or work as stated

Comments about Dorman - OE Solutions C.V. Joint Solvent Welded Split Boot Kit Outer:

Not hard to install but clamps did not seal on big part of CV. Poor design and the boot seamed to be of plastic compound and not rubber therefore not flexible as rubber and wallowed on the outer ring and let grease spill out after only a few miles, worse than the boot that was on the joint. Would suggest the Mfg. switch to a rubber compound. Returning to store.

The clamps were not like the illustration. They did not have ears to hold the band after you pulled it tight. ended up using a different band to secure it to the shaft. wrapped it in tape and siliconed it. ran out of solvent. Didn't have time to exchange it. needed vehicle.

Comments about Dorman - OE Solutions C.V. Joint Solvent Welded Split Boot Kit Outer:

Absolutely horrible quality. The boot (bellow) is of such sub-par quality that as I tried to pass it thru the axle it ruptured. I did NOT apply any major force! Then upon removing it, it tore again. There is no way this would last a year under normal weather conditions.
I have had quite bad luck with Dorman products - this has been my last purchase.
Finally, purchased a kit made by MOOG - although it looked it was stored outside before I got it you can tell it is of different (much higher) quality. Yes, it cost almost twice but I sure do not want to mess with the time I'd need to replace the Dorman kit.
All in all, one would be much better off purchasing a rubber toilet plunger from the Dollar Store and use its bellow - truly, it is of much higher quality (not being sarcastic or kidding here!)

Comments about Dorman - OE Solutions C.V. Joint Solvent Welded Split Boot Kit Outer:

Got it with good discount online and Speek perks. Straight forward to use for me. Fit almost well for my CIVIC 96. A little longer at the Joint end but I did not have to cut it, just leave it that way. Some experience: Don't use too much Solvent. This is Solvent Weld, not glue. Use too much can damage or disform the seam.
In the package they actual include 4 tube of Solvent. Take your time to do it, don't rush. Good luck

Terrible design. 3 hours and the boot still is not on. Adapters not cut all the way through. Won't fit on axle tight enough. Clamps do not hold it on and are different than clamps in kit. Not enough glue for the assembly. Would not suggest this to anyone. Should be removed from all store shelves.

This post 27 months after installing this split boot. Product can fit fit a 2000 Buick Century, it slipped off 2x, even after using new replacing bands still slipped off. If use this boot trying to save cash, you must do several things and it may work long term ie 24 months plus: use a professional tool to secure the bands. (if the are not incredibly tight - thy will slip!) 2. Solvent-glue in pkg inadiquate go to craft store and saturate joints, use Liquid Fusion clear Urethane to saturate joint! After 27 months seam stiil holds! Overall, it does work if you do it right!

                        A:

That's a great question, Auto Fan. The split collar will go into the end of the boot and the 2 bushing halves will get wrapped around the shaft with the fingers interlocking. Then you slide the bushing down the shaft and as far into the boot as it will go and then you will install the clamp. Yes the order mentioned in your query would be exact. There is no need of solvent, instead the clamp will hold it.

                        A:

With respect to your inquiry on the Dorman - OE Solutions C.V. Joint Solvent Welded Split Boot Kit Outer - Part No. 614-632, there is no need to pull the axle out. You will just have to remove the old boot and install this split boot kit. The glue-together seam must be perfectly clean when the glue is applied for a good bond. A small speck of dirt or any grease on either surface will weaken the seam and may cause it to fail. The boot must be left undisturbed for up to an hour while the adhesive cures. Otherwise the seam will not hold. For any further assistance please feel free to call us at: 1-877-238-2623 or visit the nearest Advance Auto store and one of our representatives will gladly assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.
