I installed this boot kit on my 1991 Toyota Camry, 4-cylinder sedan. It was not difficult, just time consuming. It is an inexpensive alternative to axle replacement. Though it may take about 4 hours to complete, it does have many advantages for the home mechanic over axle replacment if done correctly. You will avoid removal of ball joint and control rod, a possible axle bracket removal, a possible stuck axle in transmission, oil running out of transmission, adding oil to transmission, etc. You can also avoid a wheel alignment to compensate for the new axle's installation. AT Advance Auto, a new axle from a store would cost about $60 and the whole job done by an auto shop would have been about $325. The alignment would run about $80 extra.

Truly an international product: The boot is made in India, clamps are from China, and grease from England.
When you purchase the kit, check to make sure the instructions are there - many other reviewers report that they were missing. My instructions were also missing but a friendly clerk at the local Advance Auto store gave me a copy.

First, check the kit right away to make sure all parts are there including the instructions. My kit came in a blister pack and could have been opened by a previous customer.

Really good video instructions on this kit can be found on Youtube. That video emphasizes clean hands and practice fitting the two halves together. When the halves are glued together, work the two halves together from the center outward toward each end rather than starting from one end.

When putting the boot on the axle, put the narrow (inner) end on first and then work toward wide end - it goes on easier this way.

The boot comes with 2 tiny tubes of glue ("solvent"). One should be enough for gluing both sides together. Use the other tube for gluing the end ring and collar. Use adequately, but sparingly. The 2 tubes were just enough for me. The instructions give a toll free number to call for more glue (and advice).

I used the clamps and they went on okay - some others report using nylon cable ties which problably would be easier to put on.

So far the boot has not ripped (a week's use). I will post an update after the weather gets cold to see if it becomes brittle and breaks up then. If it does not hold up, I will adjust my rating appropriately.

THIS PRODUCT IS JUST PLAIN JUNK! IF I COULD GIVE IT A 0 RATING I WOULD. THE WEBSITE SAYS IT WILL FIT MY 1997 DODGE DAKOTA SO I WENT TO THE CLOSEST STORE IN MYRTLE BEACH AND HAD THE GUY DOUBLE CHECK, HE LOOKED IT UP AND TWICE I WAS TOLD IT WOULD FIT. SO I WENT AHEAD AND BOUGHT IT. AFTER WAITING THE FIRST HOUR FOR THE ONE SIDE TO BOND I ATTEMPTED TO PUT AROUND MY AXLE. THE "WELD" BROKE AND I HAD TO RE-WELD IT AND WAIT ANOTHER HOUR(MEANWHILE I RAN OUT OF CEMENT THAT WAS PROVIDED) THEIRS ANOTHER TRIP TO THE STORE FOR SOME EPOXY. AFTER I GOT IT TO WORK (LEFT IT TO DRY WELL OVER NIGHT) I TRIED TO PULL LARGE END OVER MY HUB AS INSTRUCTED TO, WILL NOT FIT! SO AFTER ABOUT 4 HOURS OF WORKING ON IT AND A DAY WITH MY TRUCK STUCK ON A JACK I'M REQUIRED TO GO BACK TO THE STORE AND TRY TO RETURN IT AND GET THE OE PRODUCT! PLEASE DO YOURSELVES A FAVOR AND BUY THE REAL ONE AND TAKE A LITTLE EXTRA TIME TO REMOVE THE HUB TO INSTALL. YOU WILL SAVE YOURSELVES A LOT OF AGGRAVATION

This post 27 months after installing this split boot. Product can fit fit a 2000 Buick Century, it slipped off 2x, even after using new replacing bands still slipped off. If use this boot trying to save cash, you must do several things and it may work long term ie 24 months plus: use a professional tool to secure the bands. (if the are not incredibly tight - thy will slip!) 2. Solvent-glue in pkg inadiquate go to craft store and saturate joints, use Liquid Fusion clear Urethane to saturate joint! After 27 months seam stiil holds! Overall, it does work if you do it right!

Comments about Dorman - OE Solutions C.V. Joint Solvent Welded Split Boot Kit Outer:

1st of all - it was not exact fit on either end. And I do not think it is designed like that: it has 2 sizes on a bigger end - you have to use the one that fits your vehicle and cut off the tabs - I had to cut off whole 1st ring to pull it on a CV joint but still it was not a good fit.

2nd - Wrong Ties, the ones that described in manual are fit for the job but the ones that were actually in a package - impossible to tie! You can just pull on the end, there is no buckle to flip to make really tight, and there were no brackets to secure that end either. Totally wrong part for this job. Had to buy different ones.

3rd - the small end is not tight either, you need to use the adapter, which is a joke. They way it is made - it is not going to stay, I am afraid. It is made of rings of different diameter but the peace that it goes into is flat - so when you are tighten it, it just bends and comes off of it. Awefull.

My feeling is I am going to be changing it in a couple of weeks.

Comments about Dorman - OE Solutions C.V. Joint Solvent Welded Split Boot Kit Outer:

These boots really need to be more flexible, they are too rigid to work with and then they tend to crack in very cold weather. It takes some practice to install. I ruined the first one. I used radiator hose clamps to secure. Second one lasted about 14 months, now the third one on the same axle cracked. it has been pretty cold in Pittsburgh lately. Getting rid of the car in May, really do not want to put a 350.00 axle repair in it. I may try another boot.

I suggest to wait on the grease part until after you seal the device around the axle. After sealing the second seam, Just push it back a bit and put the grease in. Otherwise if you put the grease on first, you'll be struggling to keep the seal clean when you bond it.

It was advertised as an exact fit - not so. Practice putting it together several times prior to gluing.
Check fit on car. I had to cut some of the boot off on the wheel end. I found the claps too hard to use. I could not get them tight enough. If you have a lift & can work from underneath the car then they may be better. Take a string and measure what size clamps you will need. DO NOT go by the old size clamps. I ended up using hose clamps on mine. I would use again but only to save the money!

This is a universal kit. So it may work well on some cars but not on my t-100.#1 not enough glue.#2 almost impossible to not get grease on the boot.#3 clamps are real cheap break very easy.#4when istalling the wedge/cone it wont stay in the small end of the boot when tightning the small clamp. So this was a waist of time.It was less hasle pulling everything apart and installing the one piece boot.If this was made for my specific vehicle it might have worked.

That's a great question, Auto Fan. The split collar will go into the end of the boot and the 2 bushing halves will get wrapped around the shaft with the fingers interlocking. Then you slide the bushing down the shaft and as far into the boot as it will go and then you will install the clamp. Yes the order mentioned in your query would be exact. There is no need of solvent, instead the clamp will hold it.

Store did not have the installation instructions for this part.
How are the pieces used? And don't tell me to get a repair manual for the car. That will not tell me how to install this part as this part is totally different than the original equipment piece.

With respect to your inquiry on the Dorman - OE Solutions C.V. Joint Solvent Welded Split Boot Kit Outer - Part No. 614-632, there is no need to pull the axle out. You will just have to remove the old boot and install this split boot kit. The glue-together seam must be perfectly clean when the glue is applied for a good bond. A small speck of dirt or any grease on either surface will weaken the seam and may cause it to fail. The boot must be left undisturbed for up to an hour while the adhesive cures. Otherwise the seam will not hold.
