I tried removing the old plug and the tab (?) broke off. Now what? Is there an easy way to remove the plug? It turns but doesn't seem to come out at any angle.

With out the presence of your vehicle we would not be able to properly diagnose it nor provide you with a 100% answer. We would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis and instructions on how to remove the plug.

      says simply...
If the draincock does not seal when tightened, remove the draincock. If the body of the draincock is broken, remove the body from the tank by squeezing the sides together with needle nose pliers...
you may be able to determine what the reference is to as to direction to squeeze by looking at replacement part.
