Comments about Dorman - Help License Plate Screw Kit:

I was actually surprised that I could get an item from Advance Auto Parts that could get me out of a jam. It was Sunday and my license plate had become dislodged because the dealer that sold me the car had jerry-rigged the attachment.
I immediately ordered the inexpensive kit online and hurried over to the store to pick it up. It looked just like what I needed, but when I tried to install the plastic inserts, they just wouldn't grab in the square hole in the car like they were supposed to. Examining the issue, It looked to me like the groove around the 4 sides of the plastic insert was not wide enough and so it would grab on the lip that was around the end of the square hole in the car. Since I only had like 4 dollars invested in the kit, and it was Sunday, I decided to do a little jerry-rigging of my own. Taking a hack saw. (yes I said hack saw) I tried widening the grooves on each side of the plastic insert and to my surprise, it worked like a champ. The only complication was the tamper-resistant screws that come in the kit. If the item worked on the first try, they are great, but when you have to keep fitting and test fitting, it gets to be a real pain to repeatedly be backing out screws that aren't intended to be back-outable. (I wouldn't use that word in a game of Scrabble) I was very appreciative of the fact that I did have a part that would get me out of a jam. If it had worked well right out of the package, it would have taken me about a minute and a half to effect the repair. As it was it took me an hour and a half to wrestle with this item to make it work. I only took the time to write this lengthy review of an inexpensive part in the hope that it might be valuable information for somebody that has a loose license plate on a Sunday, with a local Advance Auto Parts store, AND a hacksaw. Do not despair. There is solution.

At this time the photo shows 5 sets of screws and mounts. I submitted a question about this and got the reply, "There are only 4 sets included". The correct answer would have been to update the image.

Does anyone know how to take these off. We are selling the car in which they are used and I need to take off the license plate. It seems places that sell these do not carry the tool necessary to take them off and I am finding a hard time in getting this tool.

            A:

Spray the rusted bolt liberally with a penetrating solvent such as Liquid Wrench or Rust Busters. Let the solvent sit for five minutes or according to specific package instructions. Use the socket wrench to begin removing the bolt. Make sure your socket attachment is the correct size for the bolt. Slowly work the bolt until it begins to budge, then remove the bolt. If the socket wrench begins to slip, stop immediately. Use a hammer to help you turn the socket wrench if it is stiff. Break the bolt off if you are unable to remove it. Wedge a flat-head screwdriver between the bolt head and the license plate. Position the screwdriver facing down if the plate position allows it. Be careful not to scratch the paint. Carefully keep the screwdriver wedged and hammer the handle. If the bolt was too rusted to loosen, it will likely break off fairly easily. The tools that are required are Penetrating solvent, Socket wrench or impact wrench and Flat-head screwdriver.

This kit contains 4 1/4" x 5/8" screws and 4 nylon insert nuts(2 on each side of the plate). You can tighten the screws with any standard flat blade screwdriver. Removal is a bit tricky and needs a special Security Screw Removal Tool. Check with your local store for availability.
