This is the second time a plug blew on my 2001 F250 5.4L. The first time, I took it to the dealer and it cost me over $700 to fix. After a bit of research, I saw this product reviewed on[@]and on Youtube and seems like an easy, inexpensive fix. It installed in 15 minutes, and it works. The other reviewer must have other issues with the cylinder or his ability because it was quick and painless. I just bought another one to carry around with me beause I can complete this repair anywhere with a set of sockets. The only thing to overcome is the fear of tapping into the head, but because the tap self taps and self aligns, anybody can do it. Your choices are a $700 bill or getting over a little nervousness. Saving close to $700 isn't a joke, i'm sure if your looking at this review, you'll know what your local ford mechanic will charge.

ok the dorman spark plug thread repair kit is not the ideal option! the biggest most basic issue is that it is a steel insert! with the aluminum heads in our 4.6/5.4l ford motors expands at a 2.8% rate faster than steel mean the the aluminum spark plug hole will litterally expand away from the insert and spitting the whole repair right back out! i have 1999 f 150 5.4 triton and i had a shop do the repair. they used the dorman kit and i didnt know they lied to me. so im driving down the road and i hear the dreadfull sound it spit it back out 30mins out the garage door. so the next day i had it brought to a shop i used in the past! ive had this happen 2yrs prior on different cylinder and has been holding strong for 2 yrs and going! so i was angry.. you to just take the $400 dollar repair and move on. its not worth risking a head cause thats $1000s.. have the right people do it as well! its needs to be drilled out re tapped and a insert that is a anodized hardened aluminum!

Went to install and ended up having to grind down the outside of a socket to get it to fit in the head. Installed as instructed and started coming out the same day. Waste of money.

Maybe it will work for you, Mine did not seal and resulted in slight miss and loss of compression that got worse over time. I managed to get home before it blew out. It lasted less than 300 miles. I used jb weld to seal it; if I did it over again I would use red locktite, but I'd never do this over again. When I pulled it both the spark plug and insert had loosened to just hand tight.

It'll be over $600 for a helicoil in the #4 cylinder. 1-3 and 5-7 would have been less than $200 for a "sure thing" according to the mechanic I trust.

I guess its worth a try, but you may end up right back where you started.

Finally the plug used in the kit is the old design plug that had possible thread and according to some breakage issues.

This kit saved me around 6-700 dollars. That's what Ford would have charged to fix the problem.
Instructions were easy to understand and the job went pretty quick.
One thing I would do different is duct tape the socket to the extension, had a hell of a time getting the socket out because I didn't.
Going to buy another kit to keep in the truck in case this happens again.
          Definitely recommend!

Wanted a quick fix for blown plug on Mazda 3.0 with deep plug wells. I realize that this kit isn't for my vehicle but to get by I used the old coil with new boot and just wedged them in the well. I wouldn't try this for a customer, for myself I figured what the heck. It's been working for a couple hundred miles. We'll see. It would be a good side of the road repair if you didn't have to wait for the thread lock to cure.

thank goodness Dorman offers this product. Had to use it twice on the Ford Expy. None of the shops would touch it, let alone what they'd charge if they did. Had my truck back on the road within 45 minutes and just over $100. thanks!

Comments about Dorman - Help Cylinder Head Repair Kit:

Though I found this product easy to install it was innefective. This insert simply made the spark plug hole larger, but wouldn't tighten down properly. Instead, the threads are stripped out to an even larger size.

The next step for me will be to remove the head from the engine and install a much more expensive insert. Ford Motor Company has approved a very specific insert for this repair. That product is much more complicated to install.

Special note: This insert is not made of aluminum. You will be GUARANTEED to have a problem in the future with this product due to that simple fact. The different expansion rates of steel versus aluminum will cause the issue.

Does Dorman make the next size up? This particular size is not quite big enough. Just the male tapping threads need to be bigger. There is no more room for a larger socket in the well. Thanks.

I noticed there appears to be a highly specialized spark plug you have to use after installing this kit. Is the plug provided in the kit any good? Platinum? Iridium? Do big-name plug manufacturers (Bosch, Autolite, etc) make this specialized plug so that it could be replaced with a high quality version?

the tools needed are ---the next size up thread-tap-chaser,now that the cyl. head has been tapped oversize, you need the next size-up heli-coil-(it is basically a steel thread that you will screw in.)Then tou use a equivalent size drift that will come with the helicoil kit! & place on already inserted heli-coil & wack it 1 or 2 times to seat the tangs on the coil.-youre done, put sparkplug back in hook-up & run it! it sounds like a harder job then what it really is---once you look at it all will come together. & remember always use never-sieze on the sparkplug threads! This is the reason your problm started in the first place -aliminum head-steel thread on plug!no brainer there. Good-luck its easy---will last a lifetime if donerite!
