      Some people shouldnt do brakes

      By

      from Indiana

Comments about Dorman - Help Brake Caliper Bolt:

Sounds like some people shouldnt be messing with brakes. First of all its a DORMAN bolt, so its top quality, not junk. If they bolt was gone, gonzo, then you just didnt tighten it enough, simple as that. Ive used dorman parts for years an never had an issuse. Some cheap hardware store bolt shearing off and having half the threads left in the hole i could understand, but not one of a quality name. Ive probably done over 100 brake jobs in my life and NEVER has a single bolt come lose.

Don't Play Games, use a torque wrench

Comments about Dorman - Help Brake Caliper Bolt:

Torque these bolts to 90-100lbs, or you will be sorry! There are many cases on the forums of these bolts(and the original ones too) letting go if they are too loose. They are located behind the knuckle and need extra care to tighten.

Borrow a torque wrench if you are unsure, Advance rents them free in stores. These need the same torque as your lugnuts.

Comments about Dorman - Help Brake Caliper Bolt:

First off your bolt is gonna fly out if it is not torque to the right specification whether it be OEM or not. Most of these bolts need to be torqued to 90-100ft/lbs. Most people have a 3/8 ratchet and just torque these down with as much force as they can, which can get you on average of 60-80 ft/lbs. You should use a 1/2" drive breaker bar or a good torque wrench to install these and you won't have any problems. Plus you should install with lock tite, I do this even on OEM bolts.

Comments about Dorman - Help Brake Caliper Bolt:

The previous person was right! The same thing happened to me just last night! This is about 6 months after the brake change. I was driving down a hilly road, gently pressed the brakes to slow down a bit and "BANG" and "SCRREEEEEECH." I thought maybe a lost a brake pad. I was about 1/4 mile from home so I figured I would continue on and take it slow. Next time I hit the brakes.. "SCREEEECH" and "POP" and the front right tire locked up pulling me off the road. The tire had popped. I took the tire off in changing to the spare and everything looked okay, but twisting the rotor by hand was almost impossible and let out an unearthy scratching noise that I couldn't identify. I put the spare on and rolled into my apartment complex about 200 feet away. Got to taking the tire/brakes off today thinking I had to get to the wheel bearing.... HA! One caliper bracket bolt was completely gone and the other was loose enough to undo by hand. After seeing the loose bolt, I don't know if the first bolt sheared off or fell out. Moral of the story, don't get it!!! I'm glad I read this other person's review because I was about to buy them again contributing the missing bolt to me messing up the brake job. BAD ADVANCE AUTO PARTS... VERY BAD!

Comments about Dorman - Help Brake Caliper Bolt:

Bought this kit two weeks ago to do a COMPLETE, and I mean complete front brake job. Everything seemed to go great... Today, two weeks later, I was driving, hit the brakes normally, and almost ended up rear ending someone, of course i hit the E BRAKE and in turn, someone also came VERY close to rear ending the (you know what) out of me. Went to the closest mechanic (within a few feet), One of the two caliper bolts (this kind that i am reviewing) that were installed and torqued... was GONE... GONZO, NOT THERE. My caliper was hanging and ground the (you know what) out of the inside of my rim. Extremely dangerous. MANUFACTURING ISSUES. Its almost too bad I didnt hit the car in front of me, and its too bad the car behind me didnt rear end me, because let me tell ya Advance Auto.. You would of had one hell of a lawsuit on your hands. Get properly treated, up to par bolts.
