Comments about Dorman - Help 1x10 Ft. Silicone Repair Tape-Black:

After experiencing melted insulation in my van's fuel rail wire harness, I sought a insulator that would perform despite the engine compartment's high heat and provide a durable water tight outer wrap. The silicone ribbon (its not really a tape as I know it as there's no glue like substrate and the ribbon will only adhere to itself) seemed ideal for this job. After cleaning up the old overheated wire insulation, I was able to easily wrap the tape in overlapping winds and found that with only a moderate amount of stretch the tape would quickly and persistently cling to itelf, establishing a suitable insulator around the copper wires. Adding an additional series of wraps around the the length of the entire harness helped to further seal the wires against the elements and left me with a much neater looking harness. All ten individual, previously shorted lines passed my continuity test and after reinstallation, the van runs a, ok. Thanks to this tape and about an hour of work, I realized a savings of over $200 vs. the cost of a replacement harness and believe I've reinstalled a more heat resistant and durable product than the original design. The only minor issue is that you must be diligent to avoid having the ribbon accidentally cross itself as, once two pieces of ribbon are in contact, you'll not be able to seperate them. To reduce the chance of a foul-up, simply expose only a small sections of ribbon while maintaining a taught ribbon while applying the ribbon. After my experience, I'll be keeping a roll of this ribbon and a small pair of scissors in my glovebox as I can envision a number of potential field uses for this product.

      • Q:

What kind of temperature range can this be used on? Will it melt if it touches an exhaust component?

I was wondering if this would make a good padding layer to put in between a metal flange repair kit and the pipe itself for vibration dampening.
