Comments about Dorman - Autograde Wheel Nut Lock Chrome Acorn Lock M12-1.50, Hex , Length 1.421 In.:

      CAUTION!

In the past, I have purchased-installed-used similar wheel lock styles (incorporating a "Key" and 4 or more "LOCKs"), perhaps even a Dorman.
The "KEY" with this Dorman configuration features a 2-piece metal Key: the outside chrome with the lug portion to tighten or loosen the "LOCK" and a inner portion being a Black hard metal unique male die pattern that mates with female pattern of the lock lug.

When I was installing the first lock I hand tightened to seat to the rim and then set my torque wrench at 100 ft. lbs for torquing to the vehicle spec, BUT my torque wrench did not "click" noting it had reached the torque setting.
I was SHOCKED to instead feel a lightening of pressure (at maybe 80 ft. lbs of torque) as if I had somehow stripped the stud by over torquing the lock on the stud BUT had not.

Upon closer examination it looked as if the KEY was not turning the LOCK!!

I removed the Chrome/Black metal KEY and examined it and noticed the 2 different metal components and realized they must somehow be joined as one to be able to torque a LOCK tightly. I then used a black marker to make 2 lines aligned: 1 on the inside of the chrome piece and 1 aligned on the Black metal male part. I then tried tigtening to spec again and felt the slippage, I removed the KEY and saw the 2 black marker lines were no longer aligned - PROVING that the 2 metal components of the KEY were not bonded as 1 unit but turning independently!

I Googled Dorman and found a Customer Service phone # (no tel. # is on the packaging)and spoke to "Chad" who politely apologized and said he "would mail one out today."

IF it comes (AND WORKS and lasts and NOT FAILS during lock removal!!!) I will be satisfied with the resolution.

Perhaps I SHOULD do their QC test by placing a lock in a vice and torquing to 125 ft. lbs and see if it can take it?!
We all (sadly) know that a Quality Control check is minimal or non-existent and failures/faulty parts are acceptable in todays "world economy."

KEEP your Key # a 3 digit number with a letter (like 123 B) where you could get another if needed OTHERWISE how will you remove the Lock if it separates when removing??

      soft metal, not good

Comments about Dorman - Autograde Wheel Nut Lock Chrome Acorn Lock M12-1.50, Hex , Length 1.421 In.:

went to install the nuts and locks, nuts went on fine, no problem, but when it comes to the keyed locks, my wheels dictate a 100 lb/ft lock down torque, I did 94 at first, when I removed the key to go to the next wheel, I noticed the wheel lock was starting to deform, needless to say I got that thing off. I am now waiting on Gorilla wheel locks to come in.

Rust appears fast, which does not make your wheels look all that hot with one rusted lug nut on each wheel.

easy to install, crucial to get the correct style when ordering pay attention to detail how the lug seats when installed does it have a bevel or washer needed so wheels do not get damaged when locking lugs are installed.

How can I be sure this will fit my locking lug nut? If it does not work, may I return it to the local store?

                  A:

This not a key for the locking nut you already have on your vehicle. This is a new lug nut and key to put on your rims.

you can return to the store however if you ordered online I would re-order the correct item if you made a mistake ordering retutn the wrong item to the stotore and they will issue credit,if you got a special price online you will get the online price credit but you will pay the store price if you purchase the item at the store that is your choice.Example buy brake pads online they are cheaper, locking wheel lugs cheaper online, exchange wheel lugs same car, same mfg.but correct lugs you wont get the same price (at the store)even though they are for the same car same price(the store will be higher priced)the store will give you a credit or exchange with a smile no hassel return.Good to do business with
