This is a copy of the complaint I sent to Dorman.

....

I'd like to preface this complaint by saying that historically I have come to rely on Dorman products for my vehicles for OEM replacement parts and have not until today taken issue with their quality.

The product I purchased was a set of chrome lug nuts PN#: 711-255. This set came brand new in a sealed plastic case. I purchased them in May 2014 but did not get around to trying to put them in until this week due to extensive work travel between then and now.

This set of lug nuts contains lugs for a 1/2" x 20 wheel stud, which is what is installed on the vehicle I was working on. The lugs were in excellent condition, I had just removed them and cleaned the threads and installed a new one to replace a broken one (in fact, I used a Dorman wheel stud). When I got to the last lug nut on the first wheel I was fixing is when the problems began:

1. One of the lug nuts in the brand new 1/2 " x 20 set was actually marked M10 x 1.25 – a metric lug nut in a standard set. It would never have worked and essentially rendered the set useless.
2. The next two lugs I grabbed from the case were rusted and pitted.
3. When I did find an adequate nut I installed it by hand threading it 50% of the way down before using a hand tool to install the rest of the way. When I attempted to tighten the lug with the tool the lug nut stripped internally. Fortunately I was able to remove it with an impact, but this could have easily required I drill out the nut, the stud, and risk damaging the hub, the rotor, and worst case even the dust shield.

As you can understand, this product quality is simply too poor to continue further use. I will try returning the product to Advance Auto though I imagine I will only be able to receive a store credit since it has been so long if I can receive anything at all. I am disappointed that Dorman would release this product with its many faults for distribution. I hope that in the future this product will be improved upon to eliminate the quality issues that I encountered today.

Comments about Dorman - Autograde Chrome Spline Drive 1/2 In.-20, Hex , Length 1.395 In.:

I have gone through 2 sets of these and while they do work and did not have any size or thread problems, the chrome nuts to tend to rust in the "locking groves" on the nut. If you install them once and leave them there, great, but after just a couple of on and off occasions the grooves start to rust, badly. If you have a nice set of wheels on your ride these will definitely detract from their look! My second set is now rusty and I will be finding something else! Does anyone out there know of a good locking nut set that won't rust do easily?!

I like the lug nuts i like the special socket except not sure about the thread ends of these the factory ones are wider against the rim. Might need to add thin washer that bends slightly for width against rim.

These rusted badly the first time they got wet, which was only two days after installing. The installation tool is like a socket but the walls are so thing I am afraid to keep using it. I'm going to upgrade to something better.

Don't waste your money!!!!! Die cast not hard steel. 4 broke during first removal right at the end of the nut key leaving a half inch on the bolt. Spend 4 hours just to cut off one of them. After that had to buy new bolts for them because they were damaged while cutting off. 1 star out of 5 is to good for this, 0 out of 5 is a little more accurate.

Nuts began to rust within days of installing.
Socket became warped and will no longer fit.
Spend a little more money and get a set that is worthwhile.

I used these to replace my swollen original and the chrome began chipping soon after. They started rusting and made it harder to get the socket on. The socket has a really thin wall design and if you overtightnen the sockets in the least, it becomes swollen beyond use.
