Comments about Dayco No Slack Idler Pulley:

Purchased this for a 2006 Taurus with a 3.0L SOHC engine. There is only one idler pulley but part listings show two different parts, which are different diameters. Mine was 90mm, which is about 3-1/2 inches. I believe the other was 76 mm, or about 3 inches in diameter.

Comments about Dayco No Slack Idler Pulley:

This is not the correct width 90mm idler for 99-04 F-150/Lightning 8 rib belt applications. It will wear the belt quickly if used due to belt riding off edges of the pulley. Dayco 89048 should be listed for this application.

I spent over an hour looking on line for a replacement idler for my 1994 Ford Ranger 2.3, because the pictures on the site did not remotely resemble the one that failed. The original has guide walls on either side of the pulley, but I was unable to find the identical item at Advance.com or any competitor. Have no hesitation ordering this item as a replacement, even though it appears quite different. The outside and inside diameters are identical to the original equipment and the item works perfectly.

                    A:

I'm happy to help, Tim! For your 1997 GMC K1500 SLE Z71 4x4 5.7L it will depend on what your vehicle has for an idler pulley currently. If it is grooved it must be replaced with grooved. Smooth must be replaced with smooth. From what I see the grooved pulley tends to be for the trucks without A/C. Based on your serpentine belts routing, either the smooth side of the belt or the grooved side of the belt will come into contact with the idler pulley and that will need to match.

Don't know where the "answer man" came up with no for an answer but YES, most definately. You have to replace the belt "spring tensioner" with same as you have on vehicle but you can interchange the tensioner "pulley" that's on it,, to a bigger size tho. GM has problems with the tensioner spring losing torque after only a few thousand miles, especially on the super charged engines, then the belt starts chirping and wear grooves on out side of belt, (flat side), from slipping. To remedy that, replace the pulley on spring tensioner with pulley that is 1/2 inch bigger. That only gives you 1/4 inch more from center most point but that puts enough/more torque on belt to prevent the belt from chirping and wearing out more pre-maturely from slippage.
