Part No. 06249 Warranty Details

  • Tested in 5W-30 versus all major conventional brands, Mobil1 and Mobil1 Extended Performance in the ASTM D6278 test.
  • Motor oil formulated to meet the needs of BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen and is compatible with all conventional and synthetic motor oils
  • Meets or exceeds API SL, SJ, CF; GM-LL-B-025; VW 502 00, 505 00; BMW LONG LIFE-98; ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4; ILSAC GF-3 for API Certified Gasoline Engine motor Oils

Comments about Castrol EDGE 5W-40 Full Synthetic Motor Oil (1 Quart):

I drive a 2015 Hyundai Sonata Sport 2.4 Liter, and when you get out of the car (while it's running), you can hear the lifters tick away. I've been using Mobile 1 Extended Performance 5W20 full synthetic, changing it every 10,000 miles since I drive 95% of the time on the highway.
To save a few dollars as I am a college student living on a budget, I changed the oil to Castrol Edge 5W40 full synthetic at the local VW dealer. NO MORE TICKING, ENGINE SOUNDS LIKE A DREAM (so quiet, other than the fans coming on very high because it was 95 degrees out), and no issues whatsoever jumping from a watery weight oil to a thicker more durable oil.

Until the car dies, I'm using Castrol Edge 5W40.

You often cannot get 5w 40 in stores anywhere and typically has to be ordered from Audi/VW or ECS. It's usually pricey too, like $6-10 per quart. This was a great value. I could change my oil every month for the cost of doing it every 3 months through Audi.

Hi Neil, good question! No, this is not compatible with turbo diesel engines. You will require a motor oil that meets the VW 505.01 specifications. I do not see a compatible one available online. However I would recommend that you check with the nearest Advance store for a compatible motor oil.

                        A:

Hi Neil, I'm glad to assist you! The correct grade of oil to use will be listed in the automobile owner's manual. As far as whether to use a conventional or synthetic - that depends on the driver, the conditions and the type of driving that you do. Both conventional and synthetic oils will protect your engine, synthetic oils provide superior protection to conventional oils. Synthetics also provide much better protection at extreme temperatures and severe driving conditions. Some automobiles do require synthetic oils, this would also be mentioned in the owner's manual. According to the lubricating guide recommended for the 2005 Volkswagen Passat Station Wagon TDI, it meets VW 505 01 specification. Castrol EDGE Professional 5W-30 meets this requirement and is available online. Regrettably, Castrol EDGE 5W-40 does not meet the requirements of your vehicle, and is not recommended to use.

                      • CUSTOMER CARE

                        A:

I'm happy to help, Jiawei! The oil change interval of a motor oil is not set by the oil manufacturer. The change interval is set by your vehicle manufacturer. Synthetic motor oils will resist breaking down much better than conventional oils. If your vehicle manufacturer allows for extended oil change intervals when using synthetic oils, the Castrol Edge will be able to meet those requirements.

If you would like to extend your drain intervals past the manufacturer's recommendations you may find that purchasing oil analyses from a company that does them to see if the oil can meet those longer intervals in your vehicle. These are generally done by fleets as it allows them to get full use of the oil before doing an oil change.

If you could please provide your vehicle's year, make, model and engine size, we can look up the correct oil change interval for your vehicle.

I'm happy to help, Ian! Without the year of the SAAB I don't have a specific recommendation for your vehicle for motor oils. I would suggest to ensure that the API Performance Level meets or exceeds your engine's requirements. According to the specifications this oil meets SN. I also recommend ensuring that 5W-40 is the correct viscosity for your engine. In general specifications starting with S are for Gasoline engines and those starting with C are for diesel. Having the SN would indicate that it will perform in a gasoline engine, although I would make sure that it does meet the correct performance level and viscosity by checking your oil cap or owners manual.

With reference to your inquiry on the Castrol Edge with Syntec Technology 5W-40 Fully Synthetic Motor Oil (1 Quart) - Part No. 06249, a 5W-30 and a 5W-40 or any 5W-XX motor oil will behave the same on cold starts. Their viscosity and so their behavior will differ once they are up to operating temperature. In most inhabited regions a synthetic 5W-40 will be OK, since it will behave at least adequately from -10 to +45 or so. For any further assistance please feel free to call us at: 1-877-238-2623 or visit the nearest Advance Auto Parts store and one of our Parts Pros will gladly assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.
