The water pump on my 97 Eldorado bellied up on me so I decided to get this item. Removal of the old one was not too bad but I had to buy the removal tool from [...] 'cos I couldn't rent the removal tool from Advanceauto, nor [...]. I bent the sliding clips on the first pump because it was hard to get it aligned with the groves inside the water pump housing. Outta fustration, I forced it in there and tried to install it with the tool but bent some of the fins on the pump. Had to go buy another one with 20% disc which ended up costing me another [$]... still not bad compared to having a shop fix it. Long story short... if installing it, make sure the pump's fins are aligned properly inside the housing before turning it tight with the tool.

This pump was installed on a 1995 Olds Aurora with 97,600 miles. The pump gasket is too thin and could not fill the groove resulting in a leak immediately after installation. Yes I cleaned all surfaces thoroughly with a brass (not steel) wire brush. The pump 'kit' does not include the cover gasket which is reguired. After 6 months we had to replace the pump, removing it was very difficult because the tabs flattened from installation and jammed up upon removal. I think they are too soft which also contributed to the leaking because they did not apply enough force on the seal.

Comments about CARQUEST Water Pump - New:

This device was fairly easy to install as long as you have the special tool. The only thing about it was the seal wouldn't stay in the housing, so I improvised by using a little bit of wheel bearing grease to keep it from sliding out as I installed the water pump

Would the water pump cause this car to over heat?, Eventhough I've replaced the radiator and Thermostat if it's worn?
Asked on 7/8/2012 by Que from Atlanta GA.

            1 answer

            • CUSTOMER CARE

              A:

The car overheating may be caused due to low oil level, low water(or antifreeze) level, if the radiator cap is old or missing the seal gasket, thermostat fault, belt to the water pump or even water pump fault. We would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis before buying and having parts installed that may not (solve/be) the problem. For any further assistance, please visit your nearest Advance Auto store or call us directly at 1-877-ADVANCE (238-2623) and one of our representatives there would be more than happy to assist you.
