My Motorcraft OEM starter needed a small bump with the end of an umbrella (keeps you from having to get under the truck with something shorter)while someone else turned the key. That's usually either the solenoid (built onto this starter) or worn out brushes. I took it oo, disassembled it, cleaned and re-greased it, sanded off the armature and saw that two of the four brushes were worn down so much that there was barely any sticking out of the housing. Simple: order new brushes, $4. Guess what? The thin cross-section brushes in MY starter don't seem to exist anywhere else, as all the brushes I ordered and received were double the thickness. So a $4, 30 minute job turned into a $100, three-week ordeal. This starter is a reman, but keep in mind that all the repladcement parts used are NOT as high-quality as OEM. There's a reason OEM costs so much. This thing sounds like something from Harbor Freight when it turns over. Cheap actuator components. So hopefully it will break within its warranty period, cause I'm pretty dang sure it's gonna break. The OEM starter was built in 1990, and here it is 2015 and it finally...well, it didn't even quit, really. Brushes are a wear item like brake pads- simple fix, and cheap. If I had a dang brush set I'd be rolling with my original starter for no telling how many more years. Anyway, it couldn't be easier to change a Ford Ranger's starter. 10 minutes, tops. Thank goodness, cause I will be swapping this one out for a warranty replacement soon.

Great starter with lifetime warranty easy to install at a great price. It's remanufactured which means it has all new components in a recycled case for a cheaper price then new with the same warranty.

Comments about CARQUEST Starter - Remanufactured:

This starter was no more or less trouble to install as most I have installed over the many years I have been repairing cars, trucks and outdoor power equipment.
The trouble was from the small space the starter was mounted in, it took me about one hour using common mechanics tool's to get the job done.
Anyone with some mechanical apptitude and will should have little trouble.
Just be sure to have both SAE and metric tool's on hand because you will need both.
There are 3 bolt's holding the starter in place after I removed those the starter would not move I suspected an unseen 4th bolt on top, after struggling for most of the hour I got out my mechanic's mirror I then found that the bolt was not holding the starter so with a pry bar and a hammer I got it unstuck and out.
Installing the new unit was a snap.

i took the old starter out installed the new starter and wired everything back up as best as i could tell. (replaced battery, starter, and solenoid) the vehicle will now only click once and then nothing happenes. any suggestions. instead of using the wire that had the heat shrink on it i used the existing wire from the solenoid to the starter because the provided heat shrink wire was way to small for the wire coming from the solenoid . Honestly i have no idea what exactly i am doing so any advise or infor would be appreciated.
