this was a direct fit no shims look just like my original starter the old starter lasted me 200,038 miles so i hope this one go that far man them vortecs some good motors last long to now i have a 1998 chevy suburban but when dropping this starter think how to jam the starter up to loosen the wire srcews to take the starter wire and that small screw off would be good to have a extra hand under there but other than that it was a peace a cake also on suburbans you can put a lil snug on your oil pan bolts before you put the new starter on thats a good thing to do while you under there cause i need a oil pan gaskets so i snugged the back up a bit til i fix that

It Fit, looked just like the starter which was removed, appears to be built well, looks good, heavy starter, maybe heavy duty. Could not rate 5 stars because it's still brand new, been in use only 2-3 weeks, if it last over a year, then 5 stars.

Strong Starter!

Comments about CARQUEST Starter - New:

This starter was actually larger than the one that I removed from my 1998 GMC Sierra 2500 4X4 with 5.7 (350) engine. The size was not a problem on this application but I could see it being a problem on other vehicles where you have to maneuver the starter around other components for installation. The lifetime warranty is a real plus.

this starter is brand new made by remy, & comes with a lifetime warranty. it cost less than a rebuilt unit! go figure that! installed on my chevy k1500 with ease. did have to set it at an angle to get the small wire on. make sure u have an 8mm wrench for the small nut. a deep 1/2" socket & ratchet worked well with the nut holding down the batt wire. did not need any shims! turns over perfect.

I have used Advanced Auto for all my auto repair needs for the last five years and plan to continue in the future. The prices and the quality of the parts are great. The staff at all three stores that I use have always been very helpful and easy to work with. I recently picked up a water pump pipe for a Pickup from another source and was charged $39 for it-when I got home I checked the same part at Advanced and it was $10 so I returned the dealers part and got one from AAP.

I put this in a 99 Chevy Suburban. It is a little larger than the factory starter, but there was still plenty of room for it to fit even with the heat shied on it. Installation went smooth. It worked like a champ right away. I did not have to install any shims. Time always tell how durable, but after the first month all is well.

                • Q:

One of the reviews for this starter indicated shims were not needed.Could this solve my problem for a 99 Tahoe 5.7 engine?. I have had the tahoe for 12 yearsa, have always had a grinding noise immediately after starting, 10 years ago I put in a shim, did not change. recently I noticed some wear on the flywheel. I put in 2 shims 020 and 040 noise seemed to be during cranking. I took them out put in one about an 020 thicker then the prev 2. Noise still there while cranking. Any suggestions ?. The second problem are the shims I bought at Advance, they are the ones that curve to the left then the open end makes a right curve. I can not get them in from the right side I need to bend the tab down take starter out and insert from the left, very difficult to line up. so I need to use super glue to hold the shims in place very frustrating. any suggestions ?.

                    A:

Yes, Vic, the ToughOne Starter - New - Part No. 96120 does not require shimming to install it on your 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe 5.7L engine. Sometimes a bad starter itself causes a grinding noise and switching over to a new starter rectifies this issue. A:

Yes, it has the starter relay and it is located in the fuse box under the hood. I would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis before buying and having parts installed that may not (solve/be) the problem.

What is the starter shim needed for? This should slide in while wiggling it into meshing with the fly wheel.

Starter shims are used to make sure that the contact points of the gears on the flywheel and starter line up right on some vehicles.
