This item was the proper replacement for my worn CV shaft. I was a little concerned with the negative reviews on this product, but I'm stubborn and couldn't argue with the price. With the replacement of some additional front-end suspension components, the Jetta's riding like new. Functionally, I have no complaints. It's a perfect OE replacement. If I could add one request to the dream sheet, it would be replacement mounting hardware for the transaxle connection.

Installed on a 2000 VW GTI. After installing, I noticed that the car vibrates when a load is applied to the axles. This could be accelerating away from a stop sign, or even when cruise control is on and the road starts to go uphill; flat roads or downhill there's no vibration. It continued to worsen, and after 6 or 7 months I had to remove them. I ended up rebuilding my factory axles and re-installing them. For about the same price as these, I was able to rebuild the inner CV joint (new boot, grease, and clamps), and replace the outer CV joint (new CV joint, boot, grease, and clamps). Don't waste your money on these.

Comments about CARQUEST CV Shafts New CV Axle Shaft Assembly:

Noticed before installation that the shaft of the new axles was significantly smaller in diameter than the original axles. Immediately after installation, a vibration in the front end developed. Went through all other potential problems and ended up back at the axles. Purchased rebuilt axles from another supplier. These were original size axles with rebuilt joints. Took care of the shaking immediately. The joints on the supposedly new axles were loose. Don't buy these.

Inner CV cover on drivers side not compatible with Audi TT output flange. The vehicle is factory ride height, with no power adders. Both axles lasted less than one day, both inner joints came back to the shop with dangerously excessive play causing major shakes at speeds above 30 and grinding sounds when turning. I am surprised they still spun at all, at least they didn't leave my girlfriend stranded. I would not recommend GSP brand at all based on the 2/2 instant failures.

My car is a 2004 VW Beetle GLS TDI with the 6-speed DSG transmission. This part DOES NOT FIT. The correct VW part number is 1J0 407 272 MJ.

Need to have 12pt spline bit 4" long socket to remove and install inner driveshaft CV joint to transmission.
I found a set online delivered in 2 days for under $40. For German cars you will probably need this set again. The 30mm socket for the removal, and the 32mm socket for installation were rented from Advance Auto Parts for no charge.

                        • A:

If this is for a VW Jetta, you'll need a triple-square 8mm bit to detach the shaft from the transaxle. A triple square is like a 6 point torx (star), but with 12 points instead. I don't think Advance sells them, but one of their competitors do (A---Z---)

You'll also need a 30mm 12 point socket to remove the axle nut, if it's the original nut. This axle comes with a new, standard 6 point 30 mm nut.

Finally, you may need a hub puller to remove the hub off the axle splines, if it's stuck/frozen on there. Advance has a loaner tool program so that you don't have to spend the $100.

8 mm 6 point Allen bit for installing New axles

Several different length extensions for the sockets (especially for the drivers side).

13 mm socket or wrench for control arm

16 mm socket or wrench for sway bar

19 mm socket or wrench for removing tie bar ends

                          Taken from source: www.raxles.com

I know the 12 point socket was a specialty tool and hard to find. In fact I didn't find one but used a hex head tool instead. I had to replace the driver side axle bolts because they got striped out from useing the hex head though, but that wasn't really a problem. Tapping the hex into the bolt with a hammer helped lossen the bolts so they could come out and you can find replacement bolts with normal heads easily.
