My thermostat in my 2002 E46 was stuck open, so I first called the dealership, who wanted [$] just for the part. I got it at Advance for one third the price. Te best part is it is the same thermostat BMW sells for [$]. Even though it is sold under the Stant name, it is made by Wahler (same brand used in BMW's. It even has the same part number on it. Now I'm curious to see how many other replacement parts I can buy at Advance rather that the dealership.

Lasts about two years

It worked for about two years and now is sticking open. The car takes a very long time to warm up.

Comments about CARQUEST Caps and Stats Thermostat, 206 Degrees Fahrenheit:

This is a high-quality product that fit perfectly and works great. The biggest challenge was getting enough room to get the old one off and install the new one. You need to removed the fan shroud and then the fan which was the hard part. On-line several people posted you might need a special BMW tool. The key to getting it off was to take a crescent wrench and with a hammer give the wrench a whack hitting it clock-wise when standing looking at the motor which loosen the fan. You can then with your hand spin the fan off it's shaft/screw and then remove the shroud.

Direct replacement for the OE part so fits just like OE. I was using on a manual e46 - can say it is hard to get at the bolts with the radiator in place but it is possible !

Overall a great transaction using Advance Auto's website. New thermostat fit on the BMW 530i engine just like you would expect. Couple months later it's still working just fine. Saved a lot of money buying through Advance's web site and installing myself.

I'm glad to assist. Most vehicles have the thermostat located on top of the engine and you will find radiator hoses connected to the outlet. For more detailed instructions for installation, I generally recommend purchasing a repair manual. This vehicle only has a professional service manual Part No. CHN132924.

There are a number of things that can cause overheating. With out the presence of your vehicle we would not be able to properly diagnose it. We would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis.
