I installed this thermostat in my '02 Ford Ranger 4.0L SOHC V6. Unfortunately it was defective from day 1 and was stuck wide open so the engine would not reach operational temp (which causes a check engine light). I replaced it with an OEM Motorcraft thermostat (P/N RT1167) which can be found at other online vendor websites for only a dollar or two more, which immediately fixed the issue. I would recommend going that route. On the plus side, Advance Auto gave me no problem with the return of the defective part.

Comments about CARQUEST Caps and Stats Thermostat, 195 Degrees Fahrenheit:

Changed radiator, changed original thermostat. Didn't test original thermostat, just replaced (9 years old). Quality on original seemed better, but it's just a thermostat.

We bought this and it looked like the right part, but it did not fit properly nor did it come with all the parts needed. We went to another place that had everything INCLUDED and it fit perfectly. Even when you put in your year, make, model and engine size, it did not give us the right part.

                    A:

No, Dan! It's not safe. The thermostat in your car is responsible for controlling the amount of coolant released into your engine. When your car first starts up, the thermostat is closed and does not allow coolant into the engine until it is warmed up. The thermostat should open and allow coolant in once the engine is adequately heated. Sometimes the thermostat fails and remains closed. A failed thermostat will prevent the engine from operating within its ideal temperature range and affect its performance.

does the gasket go on top of the thermostat? can I use the original gasket. I was refered to use a fel pro "o" ring and the stant site looks like it goes between the thermostat and engine.
Also what does 12 o'clock position mean when seating the thermostat?

For help with your project, I recommend purchasing a repair manual specifically for your vehicle. This should be able to assist you further into detail on how to repair or replace specific parts.

Why would you replace a standard 180 degree thermostat with an optional 195 degee thermostat? What do you gain/lose?

                    A:

A hotter than normal thermostat in a late model computer controlled engine may activate some control functions too quickly or out of sequence with other control devices (timer delays, etc.) --which could also have an adverse effect on driveability, fuel economy, performance and emissions.
