I went with this brand name cap as a preventive measure item on my van since the old cap had over 200,000 miles on it. This cap would not seal and the system would not build pressure. I returned it and but the old cap back on. It has been 20,000 miles and the old cap is still working fine. That's what I get for doing preventive maintenance huh?

Comments about CARQUEST Caps and Stats Radiator Cap:

Replaced lots of parts in my 1995 Chevy pick up including new radiator and cap. Within first 25 miles, I noticed a leak. It was the cap. Cap does not hold pressure. Goes to show, you get what you pay for. Junk. Do not buy.

Could not get this cap to seal properly

    By

Comments about CARQUEST Caps and Stats Radiator Cap:

I replaced my old cap for cheap insurance with this model, and it started leaking badly a few days later. Putting the old cap back stopped the leak immediately. I exchanged for another new cap at the store, and the new one leaked right away. I'm hoping it was just a bad batch of caps, because I have never had issues with Stant in the past. The Mopar cap was a few dollars more, so I ended up purchasing one of those, and have had no issues with leaks. When the system built up pressure, or squeezing the top radiator hose would cause coolant to leak out from under the cap.

Comments about CARQUEST Caps and Stats Radiator Cap:

This was my first ever online parts order of any kind. It was such a great experience and such a great deal, I am unlikely to purchase items anywhere else in the future. The special online discount that was applied to this order allowed me to no only change the radiator but also the water pump and gasket, thermostat and gasket, and the top and bottom hoses. The comments that so many others had left on this site made me much more confident when making such a purchase. Price was exactly what I expected, delivery was exactly what was expected, and the parts quality was exactly what was expected. I have to give it to my local stores. They were more then willing to offer all of the advice and assistance that I needed during my DIY project.

                      A:

Hi Mike, happy to help you! This part is an exact fit for your 1999 Chevrolet Venture and the pressure rating is 16 psi. When coolant fluid overheats, it expands, causing the fluid to become highly pressurized. When it enters the radiator, the pressure increases even more because it’s in an enclosed space. The radiator cap acts as a release valve set to open at the maximum pressure point. Usually this is set at a density of 15 pounds per square inch (psi). When the fluid pressure inside the radiator exceeds 15 psi, it forces the valve open, allowing heat to escape and excess coolant fluid to overflow into the tanks on either side of the radiator. Once the radiator cools down, the coolant fluid in the overflow tanks gets sucked back into the pump, continuing its route through the cooling system.

Yes. A bad cap can cause the engine to overheat if it loses its ability to hold pressure in the cooling system. You can get a radiator cap tester to check it.

                    • A:

You could use a pressure tester to check it but it's so inexpensive you could just replace it with the recommended pressure.

As to your question, if it is not holding the correct pressure the boiling point of the coolant could be too low which *MAY* lead to overheating, especially if it is hot and you're running the AC. If for some reason it doesn't relase at the right pressure (I haven' seen it so this is hypothetical) I imagine the system could overpressure. Most likely it would break a seam on the radiator or damage the seal on the water pump.
