I was getting a vapor recovery code which suggested checking the gas cap. I had lost my original cap about 2 years ago and bought a replacement from Advance Auto I believe it was also a Stant. Although the cap currently installed looked fine (seals, gaskets, o ring etc) it was the cheapest and easiest repair to try. Bought this cap and noticed it was made quite different than the one purchased before. I didn't reset the code but just installed the new cap to see what happened. About 60 miles later the engine light went out I was reading no codes and all was fine. I'm not sure if the 1st cap went bad, was a design flaw or what but all is fine now and it was a cheap fix.

I purchased this cap less than 3 years ago because I kept getting the engine light and codes for the evap system and faulty gas cap. After some research, I saw that purchasing a new cap was the easiest fix. At first the cap was fine, but after about a year and a half I got the same codes again. Everytime I would have my van checked there would be nothing physically wrong and it was suggested to readjust the cap or purchase a new one. Once I would readjust the codes would disapear for a few months then return, especially when weather began to get colder.
Also, if you like having the cord to hold the cap onto your vehicle I do not recommend this cap. You cannot attach the cord in any way, and drilling a hole in it will only ruin it.

Comments about CARQUEST Caps and Stats Plastic Gas Cap:

I also drilled a 1/4 inch whole in the center of the cap, where the indented circle is. Pulled the retention strap off the old one, popped it in the new one. No codes or issues.

the people that said this cap could not be drilled to accommodate the tether are wrong. Drilled a hole in mine and inserted the tether button with no problem. No leaks, No CEL, and it seals better than the original that came with my truck.

Comments about CARQUEST Caps and Stats Plastic Gas Cap:

Will NOT Accomodate the Factory Rubber Line (or or teather, or cord) connecting the Cap To The Car. So Its Easy To Lose Or Leave at the Gas Station while refilling. I am not sure if a hole can be drilled into the cap to accept the factory cord either.

The sealing gasket and cap in general seam inferior to OEM gas cap.

Only Recommend this if buyer does not care about having gas cap secured to vehicle, while refilling with gas

DO NOT DRILL HOLE FOR TEATHER

Comments about CARQUEST Caps and Stats Plastic Gas Cap:

I bought this because my check engine light came on and the engine service code revealed an emissions leak related to a faulty gas cap. Another reviewer left a comment stating that this cap could be drilled to accommodate the factory tether strap. This is not the case with the recent model of this cap. Drilling the hole in this cap will destroy the built in spring tension and the cap will not work properly. If attaching the strap isn't important to you then this cap will serve the purpose. Even though I couldn't get it to click one time as instructed on the cap, it seemed to work ok before drilling the hole.

It works as promised. It would be better if it had an indent slot so you could use the tether strap that comes with the original cap. It's too easy to put the cap on the pump and forget it.

                          A:

Hi Jim, here are few instructions to remove the gas cap from a car. At first unlock the fuel-fill access door. Few cars with electric door lock systems will secure the access door over the gas cap once the car is locked. You may then unlock a door on the car to open the fuel door on such models. Other models have a lever under the dashboard or driver's seat that unlocks the fuel door. Unlock the gas cap and slip the key into the slot on the center of the cap with the teeth toward the outer circle and turn the key clockwise. The lock cylinder will give and allow the key to move. Turn the gas cap counterclockwise and unscrew the cap until it's completely off the threads. You can then replace the cap and tighten it. Simply slip the key into the slot and hold the cap by the still with one hand while turning the key counterclockwise. Finally remove the key and check the lock by trying to open the cap.

Yes, a Check Engine light comes due to various reasons. It could be as serious as a blown head gasket or as simple as a loose gas cap. I would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis before buying and having parts installed that may not (solve/be) the problem.

Both, gas caps can improve the comsuption of the gas by avoiding the evopration of the gas & you have to drive in the vehicle in economy speed to save the gas.
