Belt failed while driving down highway with AC on. Age only 11 months. Compared it with new belt at service desk. Belt showed much wear and aged rubber but no cracks. Appeared much thinner than the new belt. Is cheap rubber compound used to make them? Will try this belt one more time since it was under warranty. If early failure again will definitely go look for a better brand.

Comments about CARQUEST by Dayco Poly Rib Belt:

I replaced the water pump on my 2003 Chevy Silverado with a 4.8L engine. I decided to replace the A/C belt because I had easy access to it during the pump removal. The belt that I removed from the truck was the original equipment # 12576447 4pk960 and the Dayco 5040378 was the exact fit replacement. Im glad I changed it because I would have to take fan belt off later to get to it.

IN SEARCHING FOR A SERPENTINE BELT FOR A 2002 YUKON XL WITH A 5.3L ENGINE, ALL BELTS LISTED SAY "EXACT FIT", BUT ONE IS 37.8 INCHES LONG AND ANOTHER IS 93 INCHES LONG. WHICH IS CORRECT? OR DOES THIS ENGINE REQUIRE MORE THAN 1 BELT?

                      A:

Happy to help you with that question Kcm400. The belt with part number 5040378 is an AC and Tensioner belt. It does appear to be the case that your vehicle has 2 belts. The other 2 belts will be main drive belts are different depending on the amp rating of your alternator. Part number 5060923 is a main drive belt for an alternator with a 105amp rating and is 92.32inches in length. Part number 5060930 is also a main drive belt for a alternator with a 130amp rating and is 93 inches.

Hi Tommy, without the presence of your vehicle we would not be able to properly diagnose it, nor provide you with a 100% answer. I would suggest that you take your vehicle and get it thoroughly checked by a certified mechanic before buying any parts that may/may not solve the problem.

                      A:

It is common to replace the timing belt tensioner at the same time as the belt is replaced. The usual failure modes of timing belts are either stripped teeth (which leaves a smooth section of belt where the drive cog will slip) or delamination and unraveling of the fiber cores. Breakage of the belt, because of the nature of the high tensile fibers, is uncommon. Correct belt tension is critical - too loose and the belt will whip, too tight and it will whine and put excess strain on the bearings of the cogs. In either case belt life will be drastically shortened. Aside from the belt itself, also common is a failure of the tensioner. For any further assistance, please visit your nearest Advance Auto store or call us directly at 1-877-ADVANCE (238-2623) and one of our representatives there would be more than happy to assist you.
