Real easy to install, just used a 15mm socket to take the tension off the belts then a 13mm to remove the tensioner from the engine.

Old one has a smaller (flat) pulley (not the ribbed one) but the tension is in the spring so the size shouldn't matter or they would have different size for you to swap out or tell you to buy a different one.

Didn't need to remove the fan cowl, made it a little trickier but noting to worry about.

Make a note or take a picture of the way the belt goes so you know how to put it back before you remove it...

Install the new one, line up in the proper location (read instruction or use youtube). Torque to 31ft/lb for my jeep 2004 liberty sport, or 40NM.

Now when putting the belt back on. it will be EASIER if you put it on everything but the one under the AC compressor which is the large SMOOTH pulley (water pump) if you get it over all the ribbed pulleys first its easier. Then all you do is put a 13mm socket on the tensioner pulley and pull it up with your left hand (clockwise so you're ratchet is to the left of it). Your right hand is easing the belt over the large smooth pulley. You can do this by yourself as it moves a fair bit. Release gently and check that its on the pulley where it should be. If you try and put it onto one of the ribbed pulleys you're making work for yourself.

Good luck and double check everything before you start up.

This thing worked OK, and gave me a little extra tension. However I was super annoyed that the pulley / cog / not-sure-what-that's-called on the right was too large in diameter. I went to the store to see if it was a mis ship.

Nope.

So I had to reuse an old pulley from the old one to make it fit the belt.

Comments about CARQUEST by Dayco Belt Tensioner:

Jeep Liberty had a chatter at idle with the AC on. Replaced the grooved pulley. Didn't fix it. Replaced the idler pulley. Still no luck. It turned out to be the rubber tensioner assy. itself. Replaced the unit, with pulleys too, and problem solved. Used to shift into neutral at stoplights to reduce noise. No more! Unit made it USA too. Can't beat it.

Comments about CARQUEST by Dayco Belt Tensioner:

Only time will tell. The factory belt tensioner assembly only lasted six years. If I have this vehicle in six years and the Dayco no slack auto belt tensioner is not making noise, drawing the RPM's down on the engine when in gear and the compressor is running; then I will be more than happy. I would also keep buying this product in the future when I know for sure that it will last as claimed. I have not had the oppertunity to buy any of Dayco's products because; this is the newest vehicle I have ever owned.

                  • Q:

I have a 2004 Jeep Liberty Sport 4x4 V6 (manual tranny) with 160,000 miles. I purchased this to replace the stock tensioner/idler assembly. However, after removing the original, I found the size of the idler pulley was only 3", while this replacement has a 3 1/2" idler pulley. Why is the idler pulley a different size? It says it is exact fit; however, I would like to know why the change was made.
                    Thank you.

                      A:

We apologize for any inconvenience caused. The idler pulley associated with the Dayco No Slack Automatic Belt Tensioner, Light Duty - Part No. 89254 is 3.00" in diameter. Both the 3.00" and 3.50" idler pulley are compatible with your 2004 Jeep Liberty Sport 4x4 V6 though the 3.50" is the exact fit. Dayco offers a 3.00" idler pulley as it is applicable on all V6 and V8 engines as well. Compatibility with a wide range of application is the only difference between these pulleys. For any further assistance please feel free to call us at: 1-877-238-2623 or visit the nearest Advance Auto Parts store and one of our Parts Pros will gladly assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.
