    What is the ohms resistance for this item and what should the voltage drop be to the coil when the ignition switch is in the run position after it passes through the resistor?

    • A:

      The way this works is is full battery voltage to the coil when starting, then approximately 10-11 volts when running. Then lower voltage makes the coil run cooler and last longer. If you bypass the ballast, you will shorten the life of the coil. These are directional, check your wiring.

      I'm glad to assist, Wrong-way T! The resistance on this BWD Ballast Resistor (Part No. RUE1) for your 1973 Dodge Coronet 6.6L 400 CID V8 is 4.75 ohms. BWD does not have a specification for the amount of voltage drop when the ignition switch is changed to the run position. The actual voltage drop may vary based Ohm's Law. An alternator will typically charge at 13.8-14.4 volts and the amperage output can also vary depending upon the draw.

    What does this part do? Can it cause the truck to not want to start at times?

    • A:

      These generally don't fail unless cracked/ broken apart - that would might cause a "crank, no start". Their is a difference between no crank and no start. Intermittent no crank - battery cables, starter relay, and neutral safety switch. Crank, no start - Ignition wiring, bad ignition control unit, bad coil. All The ignition components are relatively cheap. Intermittent wiring problems - check the grounds and then check it again, bad grounds are usually what causes mystery problems.

      I'm glad to assist, Alex! A ballast resistor reduces the current flow through the coil and keeps the coil from overheating. If this part fails it can certainly cause the vehicle to not start. If you are unsure of the part causing your vehicle's failure I suggest checking a repair manual for your vehicle to see if there is a diagnostic procedure available.
