Replaced at 133K idle was higher than normal. When I took the oem one out it looked very worn/pitted. Runs great now.

Comments about CARQUEST by BWD Idle Air Control Valve:

Looked this part up through selecting my McLaren-version '90 Grand Prix at the homepage, then by searching for Idle Air Control Valve. This part said it would fit, bought it, tried to put it on the throttle body, but the screw locations on the new part are offset, unlike the screw positions on my throttle body.

                  A:

Hi George, as there may be various reasons for this problem, without the presence of your vehicle we would not be able to properly diagnose it, nor provide you with a 100% answer. I would suggest that you take your vehicle and get it thoroughly checked by a certified mechanic before buying any parts that may/may not solve the problem.

                  A:

Hi Shannon, great question! The idle air control valve may be the possible cause of the problem on your Pontiac Grand Am. However, the answer to this is bit more complicated than you think. This needs an expertise to determine. I would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis before buying and having parts installed that may not solve or be the problem.

94 Pontiac Gran Prix will start (sometimes difficult) but cuts off if removing foot from Gas and when attempting to place in drive, it has not been driven much in the past few months but did start to hesitate / miss while driving down the road a few months ago. Sound like IAC & where is IAC located on this vehicle?

                  A:

The IAC valve should be located on the front of the engine just left of center. It has a set of wires plugged into it and it has two star head nuts holding it to the engine block.

Answered on 8/30/2011 by Vincent from AAP
                • A:

It's NOT located on the engine block, like Vincent said! The idle air control motor/valve (IAC) is typically located on the throttle body just before the upper intake manifold. It's often near the throttle postion sensor (TPS). On a 3.1L V-6 GM engine, for example, it's located just above the TPS on the top/rear side of the throttle body, facing the firewall of the car. There are 2 star (Torx) screws, (should be T-20 size driver) that hold it to the throttle body and one 4-wire weatherpack connector. Be sure there isn't carbon buildup inside the port where the IAC pintle valve seats. If so, clean it out with come carb cleaner and a pipe cleaner or a soft brass wire brush. If the IAC port is really gunked up, you many need to remove the throttle body (not terribly difficult) and use a screwdriver to carefully dig out/remove the built up contamination. Another thing to consider is to make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks. Vacuum leaks often account for a lot of drivability issues.

I have a 1993 Buick Regal with a 3.1 and the idle in it is TERRIBLE! It always jumps around after warming up and has stalled many times before we got the engine fuel lines etc all cleaned. It still idles bad and was wondering it this is what it is. Almost always when idling it will jump around and feel like its going to stop.
