Bolt access was difficult and slow-going due to tight location and you should remove the vacuum lines & electrical cables near it to help with access, but if you take your time, it's very easy. Also, my port was FILTHY, so it is wise to clean it to prevent your new valve from getting fouled right away. I tested the MAP sensor after installation and all tested perfectly. The truck "settled" down nicely after new EGR valve installed and all the backfiring stopped after a 5 minute test ride.

Happy to help Shadetree! If the valve is negative back pressure is not available. It will function like an OE(original equipment) part. One thing to be aware of is the EGR Valve you linked Part No EGR101D corresponds with OE No 17113371, and 19210654. Another option we have is Part No EGR117D that corresponds with OE No 17111846 and 19210683. Be sure to check the OE number on your EGR before purchasing.

                          A:

Hi Jeff, great question! An EGR valve works by recirculating used exhaust gases into your engine. These gases contain unburned fuel but very little oxygen, and they're very hot. A hot intake charge carries less oxygen, so a working EGR system effectively makes your engine act smaller than it really is. In terms of driving, an EGR valve that's stuck open will cause a noticeable drop in horsepower at the very least. Along with that may come detonation "knock" or "ping" under hard acceleration, and the attendant cylinder misfires. The engine will also see an open EGR valve as a massive vacuum leak, so expect hard starting and a very rough idle. An EGR stuck closed or clogged with carbon won't exhibit many symptoms, since engines don't technically need them to run. But expect a very noticeable drop in fuel economy, a noticeable gasoline smell from the exhaust pipe, a very hot catalytic converter, or all of the above. All modern vehicles monitor the EGR system, so any fault with the system should trigger a check-engine light. You'll get one anyway if the engine ends up detonating, misfiring or running rich; all of these will trigger diagnostic codes. But you should find EGR diagnostic codes along with them if the EGR is the source of the problem.

After it warms up and you drive in heavy traffic the check engine light comes on. When this happens the engine idle runs up and the truck shifts at much higher RPM's. You can turn the engine off and restart it and the truck runs fine. Any clue what causes this?
