        • Q:

I just installed a P7122 Worldwide alternator on my 1971 Olds Cutlass, which has an external regulator. After reading the specs, it appears this alternator has an internal alternator. Is that correct? If so can I damage the alternator, the external regulator, or my car? And I am not sure the alternator is working. My battery is fully charges, and after starting the car, if I remove the positive battery cable, the car stalls.

            Tech tip 597 states.

            1. Removing the ground from the voltage regulator wil damage it.
            2. To temporarily bypass regulator connect the 3rd wire to the F termina on the alternator.
            3. On indicator lamp systems, the indicator amp circuit must be in working order.
            4. DO NOT ground terminal R off the alternator.
            5. Most alternator failures are caused by defective/ discharged batteries, loose drive belts, or corroded wires.

          • A:

No problem. The red wire is the hot and goes to the largest terminal, the black wire is ground and goes to the smallest terminal. The blue and white wire connect your alternator to the external voltage regulator. Pull an alternator diagram for your car from google if you get confused. It is really easy to read. Paul from advanced auto apparently doesn't know jack about cars.
