First received the 4WD part, not the 2WD Rack and Pinion unit. Local Store got me the right part and installation went fairly easy.

But 2 days later and it is leaking around the hose fittings. Now we have to disconnect them and try some new o-rings.

Comments about Cardone Rack and Pinion Complete Unit - Hydraulic Power - Remanufactured:

You can be a a little experienced DIY to do this. Make sure you have the sockets for the 2 bolts that hold unit to the frame before you do the job. These are large, mine were 22 milimeter, not your typical socket size. I went to Advance parking lot and the store let me try the sockets for size before I bought 2 sockets. You need 2, one for the nut and one for the bolt. You can use a wrench on the bolt if you want to. They are so large you can use either metric or standard. (No special tools needed for the lines. Just open end wrenches that fit.) I bought a metric and a standard because I didn't want 2 metrics. Disconnect everything. Note how the hydraulic lines are routed. I took a picture with my phone.Put the two hydraulic lines somewhere in the front by the radiator so they don't get in the way when removing and iinstalling. They will hang you up if close to the unit.Make sure you disconnect the ends by the ball joints Don't change any of the nuts or ends settings. Do not loosen the adjusting nuts. You will need to count the revolutions when it is off to put the ends back on. This way you will be really close for the front end alignment.Pull towards driver side as far as you can get it. Drop passenger side down below control arm. Slide out pulling under the control arm. This is much easier then trying to pull thru the wheel well. Loosen nuts. Count revolutions taking off and reverse count for installing on new one.

how can you tell when you need a new rack and pinion?

                A:

A loose feeling within the steering wheel constitutes a common symptom. You can usually feel it while turning the steering wheel back and forth.Steering wheel wandering may indicate worn inner tie rod sockets, causing problems in the rack and pinion steering. Tire wear may also indicate problems in the rack and pinion. The hard steering can also indicate rack and pinion issues. Although noise can mean a lot of things when it comes to vehicles, it might potentially signal rack and pinion steering issues. Worn-out inner tie rod sockets can produce noise within the steering column. Noise can also arise from bad rack bushings and may also indicate the need for yoke adjustment within the rack and pinion column. For further assistance, please feel free to call us at 1-877-238-2623 or visit your nearest Advance Auto Parts store and one of our representatives would be more than happy to assist you.

                A:

If you are having a problem with the steering rack and pinion, your steering will seem harder than it should and the car will not respond well to the movements of the steering wheel. The car will be harder to steer in the morning than later in the day.
