Check Vehicle Fit

A1 CARDONE Remanufactured Steering Gears are the component within a car’s steering system that guides the wheel’s movement in conjunction with the direction that the steering wheel is rotated, helping achieve ideal steering response for more efficient driving. The micro-finished surfaces of it's shafts are precision-designed to provide a smoother drive, while the factory-set Pitman shaft transmits the motion it receives from the gear box by moving the wheels left or right to turn the wheels. OEM grade O-rings and seals are used and meet required specifications, providing you a quality product both you and your vehicle can rely on.

Product Features:
  • 100% computerized hydraulic testing measures for proper flow, leakage and performance to ensure perfect fit and function
  • 100% new O-rings and lip seals ensure no leaking and long-lasting performance
  • All critical components (campacs, spool valves, etc.) are triple-tested to ensure product reliability
  • Units are supplied with 100% tested and calibrated pressure relief valves for guaranteed performance
  • Shafts are surfaced to precise specifications to eliminate premature seal wear and extend gear life
  • Rust inhibitive "Cool Dip" finish is a penetrating dye that completely covers all exposed surfaces for a consistent, protective finish that will not crack, flake or peel
  • Guaranteed fit and function
  • Meets or exceeds O.E.M. performance

This is a good replacement for the factory steering box. The factory box became difficult to turn right only and this resolved the problem easily with minimal effort. All the connections were leak free and it mounted up just as the original box. Took about an hour to replace once I was able to separate the pitman arm from the drag link which was the most difficult part of removing the old steering gear box. I suggest the use of a "pickle fork" style separator to disconnect the pitman arm from the drag link as all other methods failed to work for me. I also decided to spend the extra money to replace the pitman arm as it already had 150K miles on it.

Comments about Cardone Power Steering Gear - Domestic:

purchased for a 2004 chevy avalanche. Fixed my problem of not having power steering when turning to the right. especially at low speeds. Easy installation, only issue I ran into was the pitman arm does not sit all the ways against the base of the steering shaft, like the original OEM installation. Actually leaves about 3/8 of an inch gap between the pitman arm and the bottom of the steering shaft.

Comments about Cardone Power Steering Gear - Domestic:

I bought this steering box for my 99 silverado and everything went smoothly with the installation and everything was pretty straight forward. The stock gear boxes are a common problem, it was fine when I steered the wheels to the left but it felt like I had no power steering when turning to the right at a stop or low speeds. I would also recommend replacing the pitman and idler arms while you're at it, and also give the power steering hoses a good check.

what is and why is there a difference in the 2wd and 4wd steering box's. One part number ends in 12 and the other 13. I understand by reading other questions that the part number needed for my 2004 Chevy Avalanche 1500 4x4 z71 is the part ending in 13. But what and why is there a difference?

Good question, Rob! I'm glad to assist you. The 4-wheel drive box's output shaft has the splines indexed to allow the pitman arm to provide "fore/aft" movement, while the 2-wheel drive box's output splines are indexed to allow "left/right" movement.

After that time expires, it can only be exchanged for a new item. So the warranty is valid for the life of the part as long as the customer owns the vehicle.

I would recommend replacing the whole thing to ensure stability and longer life of the part. Not only that you would also have the benifits of recieving warranty on the entire part as to just getting that one gear. Also by just replacing one gear you could be putting more strain on the rest of the system because only one part is brand new and eventually it would just wear out that gear as well.
