Check Vehicle Fit

A1 CARDONE Remanufactured Steering Gears are the component within a car’s steering system that guides the wheel’s movement in conjunction with the direction that the steering wheel is rotated, helping achieve ideal steering response for more efficient driving. The micro-finished surfaces of it's shafts are precision-designed to provide a smoother drive, while the factory-set Pitman shaft transmits the motion it receives from the gear box by moving the wheels left or right to turn the wheels. OEM grade O-rings and seals are used and meet required specifications, providing you a quality product both you and your vehicle can rely on.

Product Features:
  • 100% computerized hydraulic testing measures for proper flow, leakage and performance to ensure perfect fit and function
  • 100% new O-rings and lip seals ensure no leaking and long-lasting performance
  • All critical components (campacs, spool valves, etc.) are triple-tested to ensure product reliability
  • Units are supplied with 100% tested and calibrated pressure relief valves for guaranteed performance
  • Shafts are surfaced to precise specifications to eliminate premature seal wear and extend gear life
  • Rust inhibitive "Cool Dip" finish is a penetrating dye that completely covers all exposed surfaces for a consistent, protective finish that will not crack, flake or peel
  • Guaranteed fit and function
  • Meets or exceeds O.E.M. performance

I purchased this gear box to replace the worn out gear box on my stepfather's 1997 s10 truck. This gear box is an exact fit replacement part. I was pleased that it did not require any modification to install. The only drawbacks are that you will need a gear puller and it would definitely help to have a second person. From start to finish this project took about 2 hours for my stepfather and I to complete. It is recommended to flush all old power steering fluid out of the system, so make sure to have several quarts of fluid on hand for refilling when complete. Overall this install went well and I would recommend this part to someone else.

I bought this to replace a badly warn steering gear on an 01 Blazer. The price was fair and one of the local stores had it on the shelf. The unit was well packed and included new O rings for the lines. The reason I didn't give this product 5 stars was the unit I received had damaged threads in two of the three mounting holes. I had to pull the unit back out after it was nearly completely installed to chase the threads so that the two lower mounting bolts would go in all the way. No, I didn't cross thread them, there was a large burr at the bottom of the threads possibly from rough handling the core. Not a real problem for me, I had the stuff to fix it. For someone without a lot of tools it would have been a show stopper and a trip back to the store. Once installed it worked great.

Lasted a few months & have to replace. Good thing is it is still covered by warranty. Better off to pay a bit more & only have to replace once.

I exchanged the first gear box for another. It was just as bad. Cardone brags about quality and customer service on their website. It is just plain wrong on this product. The sticky paint was all over the unit, in the splines and mounting hole threads. The latter caused me hours of extra work. The flat on the input shaft should at 12:00, facing up when installed. It was off by about 20 degrees relative to the pitman shaft. The tech support people tried to help me but could not overcome the problems. Having traded in my core, I was stuck at with AA.

Comments about Cardone Power Steering Gear - Domestic:

First, I have installed these before and am extremely careful lining up threads in order to not cause a cross thread. Attempted to connect my old hose to the high pressure side- caused cross thread. Purchased a new hose for 20.00 and made an attempt to install new hose while off of the vehicle. Same issue, had to return both back to the store. Took a while to go thru returns in that ordering online with a store pick-up is very tedious when you go to return items. I did have a gentlemen who was patient and thorough in his attempts to do this correctly. Do not like the fact that returns can take up to 10 days to show a credit upon your account. Probably will consider taking business elsewhere due to this delay in credit.

Part works great, eliminated the nagging steering issues I had. The only cons were the lack of notes for the various o-rings (one was way big) and the threads on the high pressure hose were hard to start on the part.

Provides excellent steering feel on a lifted TJ. Time will tell how the seals hold up. 5yr warranty will cover any early problems. I found that my aftermarket drop pitman arm wasn't totally tight. The nut was bottoming out on the splines. I had to use a washer to get the arm fully tightened.

                    • Q:

When I Install this, do I have to turn the steering spline for the pitman arm? When I removed my old one I had my front wheels pointed straight ahead, everything bolted on and lined up correctly with my new steering box with no problems. The trouble I'm having now is after fiiling it with power steering fluid, it is very hard to turn the steering wheel, like there's no power. My old box just had a bad leak, thats why I changed it, and always turned easy.
Yes, I did flush the system, i used the correct fluid, I raised the wheels off the ground and bled the system, filling and turning the wheels method. What did I do wrong??

                        A:

I'm glad to assist, Awsomes10! Sounds like this has been a difficult project. I'm not sure if there was anything "wrong" with how you did your installation. On many vehicles ATF is used for the power steering system and power steering fluid may not be the correct fluid. The installation instructions can be found here: http://www.cardone.com/Products/Product-Detail?productId=27-7560.

Cardone also recommend having a repair manual for the vehicle available for reference as well as each vehicle may have specific instructions. If you are unable to get the power steering pump working I suggest having a mechanic take a look and you can try our 'Need expert help?' link further down this page. Or, if you feel that the part is defective, you may ship it back or return it to your nearest Advance Auto Parts store for an exchange.
