This product was easy to install. I removed the old one and mounted and plugged the new one in and that was it.

    Advance Auto Parts' Website Wrong

      Comments about BWD Voltage Regulator:

I bought the R281Z voltage regulator to put in my 1968 Chevy C10 truck. Advance Auto Parts' website said it would fit - and it did "fit" but it didn't work properly. Also, the picture of the part on the website (the picture of the bottom to be more specific) led me to believe that this part would be correct (this picture matched the look of the old electro-mechanical regulator I was looking to replace). However, when I got the part, I discovered that that picture of the bottom of the part was not correct at all. I decided to give it a try anyway. After putting it in, I determined that even with the engine off, the part was causing my battery to drain down. This was happening because pin 3 is connected (apparently internally) to pin F. And the truck's wiring harness takes pin 3 directly to the battery. Therefore with everything connected like it was with my old regulator, I would get a current draw of approximately 1.6amps with the truck just sitting there (no key in the ignition) - thus explaining the battery drain. Looking into it further, I discovered my old regulator connects pin 4 (not pin 3) to pin F. This makes sense because the truck's wiring harness brings pin 4 to the ignition switch and thus the battery power would go to pin F only when the key is inserted and turned – the way it is supposed to work in my understanding. This difference between the two regulators could explain the troubles encountered by the guy from Cullman, AL who also posted a negative review (5/31/2010) of the product. Be that as it may, this regulator didn't work for my truck as is – contrary to the website's claim. Perhaps if I swapped pins 3 and 4 going to the regulator in the truck's wiring harness it might have worked (or at least not drained my battery when it was connected). I decided it wasn't worth it to mess with any more and returned it. I was then able to find a regulator elsewhere that more closely duplicated the original (electro-mechanical rather than solid state). I connected that one up and everything works great! Amazing how sometimes things will just work if you have the correct part. Bottom line is I would not recommend this part to a friend unless they had independent verification that this part will work for their vehicle. There was probably nothing wrong with the part - what was definitely wrong was Advance Auto Parts' website.

        Comments about BWD Voltage Regulator:

Changed out the factory 40 year old regulator on my newly restored 69 Camaro because I was having electrical problems and not only did it not fix the problem but it caused several new sets of silverstar headlights to blow out. Replaced alternator with new unit and re-installed old regulator and haven't had a problem in the last 5 years of daily driving. They don't make em like they used to.

Where can I get a diagram for wiring the pin outs on this unit? Or at least a translation of what each pin connects to? I know F is for field but which goes to battery, negative, etc? The pins say F234.

The following is the description of the four pins on this BWD Voltage Regulator - part# R281Z: F= field to "F", 2 goes to "R" on back of alternator, 3 goes to the horn relay (12v) and 4 goes to warning light.

I would recommend purchasing a Haynes repair manual for your vehicle. This will have many of the specifications needed for a variety of repairs.
