  • Q:

so I am thinking of replacing the mechanical fuel pump with an electrical pump on my 1979 Fiat Spider - I want to be sure the pump is only running when the engine is running - does this relay ensure if the engine is stopped the pump is off? (aka, I don't want to hook the electric pump the the ignition on = because in a crash the fuel could keep pumping........)

      A:

I'm happy to help, 1979 Fiat Spider Owner! This sounds like an interesting project. The fuel pump relay is used to control power to the electric fuel pump. It functions like a circuit breaker. When power is applied the circuit closes and the fuel pump runs.

On almost all vehicles with an electric fuel pump you will hear the fuel pump pressurize the fuel system when the key is turned to the on position. The relay is designed to cut off power to the fuel pump in the event that there is a fault in the circuit to prevent an electrical fire.

Most newer vehicles have a fuel pump cutoff switch that cuts power to the fuel pump in the event of a collision. Adding this type of switch to your circuit would be the best option to prevent fuel from continuing to pump if the vehicle is involved in a collision.
